Robert Matthews Obituary

Robert Nicholas Matthews

January 14, 1942 - July 24, 2025

Robert Nicholas Matthews, a devoted father, grandfather, and respected leader in the accounting and financial community, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on January 14, 1942, Robert built a remarkable life marked by dedication, wisdom, and generosity. A Certified Public Accountant for over six decades, he was the leading partner of Reilly, Matthews, and Bononcini Certified Public Accountants. Over the course of his 62-year career, Robert advised more than a thousand clients, providing not only expert financial guidance but also steadfast support to countless small businesses. His clients often became lifelong friends, and his name became synonymous with integrity and trust. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Robert was a passionate fisherman who found peace and joy on the water, especially during deep-sea outings with close friends. Whether in his office or aboard his fishing boat, the Sea Hunter, Robert was known for his warm presence, quick wit, and genuine care for others.

He was a beloved father to his five sons: Robert (Adrian), Paul (Lynn), Edward (Carolyn), Daniel (Sandy), and James (Barbara). He was also a cherished grandfather to Amanda, Catherine, Evan, Nicholas, Luke, Lena, Raymond, and MacKenzie. A true mentor and guiding force, Robert's legacy lives on through the values he instilled in his family and the deep connections he forged within his community.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, July 31, 2025 at 11 o'clock in St. Augustine's R. C. Church of St. Damien Parish, 13th Street at Wesley Avenue, Ocean City, NJ, where his viewing will be from 9am until 10:45 a.m. Burial will be private. The family appreciates your expressions of sympathy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sister Jean's Kitchen and the South Jersey Jazz Society, in memory of Robert. Robert will be remembered not only for his brilliance as an advisor, but for his boundless kindness, unwavering loyalty, and the profound impact he made on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a wonderful soul, and we will all miss him dearly. Arrangements by The Godfrey Funeral Home of Ocean City. Condolences may be left for the family at www.godfreyfuneralhome.com

I am so sorry to hear of Bob´s passing. He was a friend of my late husband (Michael Schurman) and we was our account for decades. Wishing the Matthews family peace at this difficult time.
