Ruth Harker Obituary

HARKER, RUTH ELLA ANDERSON 96 - of Vineland, passed away on Thursday afternoon in the Bishop McCarthy Residence, Vineland, NJ. Born in Mt. Vernon, NY, she came to Vineland with her late parents & older sister, Frances in 1913 at the age of 4. She was educated in the Vineland schools & was a graduate of Vineland High School Class of 1928. Ruth was a member of the 1st Girl Scout Troop, here in Vineland in 1920, and was active in the Girl Scouts & Brownies for many years. Ruth was a 60 year member & past President of the Wallsholm Club, the oldest Woman's Club in Vld. She was also a former member of the Eastern Star. Ruth was a longtime member of the South Vineland United Methodist Church & in later years the Union Grove United Methodist Church, Pittsgrove. Ruth's hobbies were varied & many, sewing, crafts, crocheting, writing short stories. Ruth was the wife of the late John Shield Harker, she is survived by: 1 sister: Maud Anderson Kidston of North Carolina, 2 granddaughters: Kim Harker Healy & husband Dwight, of Hammonton, NJ, Kerry Harker & husband Matthew Roth, Rochester, NY., 2 great granddaughters: Alyson Healy & Ella Roth, 1 great grandson: Silas Roth 2 nephews, Kenneth H. Miner & family, Charlotte, NC., Russell Miner & family, Woodstock, III, 1 niece, Beverly Cutten & husband Bates, Garrison, NY and cousin, Marilyn Nealis, Vld Ruth was pre deceased by her daughter, Lucile, 1982, husband John, 1990 & son William in 1991. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday in the Pancoast Funeral Home, 676 S. Main Rd., Vineland, NJ where relatives and friends will be received from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Burial will be private in the Siloam Cemetery, Vineland. Ruth & her late husband, John established a yearly Memorial Scholorship Fund at Vineland High School, upon the death of their daughter, Lucile, (a teacher at Johnstone School) to be awarded to a worthy student each year. I give thanks and pay tribute to Mrs. Harker for her life and the contributions she made through her daughter (Lucile) who was my 4th grade teacher. Ms. Harker was a positive force in my life at a time when I was much in need.
