Bernard Swann Obituary

Bernard L. Swann, Sr.
During the mid-day hours on May 5, 2021, Mr. Bernard L. Swann, Sr. a native of Chesterfield, received his reward and earned his wings. In the midst of laughter he silently said his good-bye and went to be with the Lord.
He was born April 16, 1937 to the late Charlie and Carrie Hines Swann. He attended Chesterfield Public Schools. At an early age Bernard accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Bethesda Baptist Church in Chesterfield, VA. As a young man he worked for Landers Florist and later went on to work for the Virginia Department of Transportation, where he remained for 30 plus years.
Bernard was blessed with the gift of a loving heart; he used his wisdom to touch the lives of those whom he encountered. You could find him working in his garden or making sure his lawn was perfectly manicured. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren and being a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Carrie Hines Swann; four brothers, Charles, Lewis, Lawrence, and James Swann; three sisters, Edith Stith, Thelma Swann and Edna Stewart; and two daughters, Angela and Karen Swann.
Bernard leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted and loving wife who never left his side, Brenda Swann; six children, Bernard L. Swann, Jr. (Nicole) of Chester, VA, Linda Benjamin (Freddie) of Petersburg, VA, Juel Booth of Richmond, VA, Gary Swann (Marline) of Bellwood, VA, a devoted daughter, Melissa Freeman, and both Kennyada Swann of Chester, VA; seven loving grandchildren, Deona, Alexis, Niyah, Miracle, LaVaughn, Brandon and Brian; one sister, Rebecca Bell of Petersburg, VA; five sisters-in-law, Louise West and Shirley Talley both of Richmond, VA, Marion Swann and Edmonia Booth both of Chester, VA, and Laura Swann of Pennsylvania; one brother-in-law, Willie Booth of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends among them devoted Judy Coleman, Danny and Marie Osborne all of Chester, VA.
Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Marcus N. Leggett, eulogist. The interment to follow at Mt. Minnis Cemetery.

I will always have fond memories of growing up with my older cousin, "Snookie", his younger brothers, nephews, nieces , my brother, other cousins and neighbors. "Snookie" had an old convertible car and rode us all around Chesterfield, Petersburg and vicinity and to the Drive-In Theater. He was our unpaid chauffer because he was the first to get a driver's license. We played softball, badminton, and hiding go seek. He was a star baseball player who was approached by professional team scouts. He and his Mother decided he was not interested in leaving the area. "Snookie" was always kind, patient and fun to be with.
May he rest in eternal peace with LOVE!!
