Cassandra Currie Obituary

Cassandra "Sandy" Currie was born in Rocky Mount, NC on August 20, 1952 to her devoted parents Mr. William Tillery, Jr. and Annie Pearl Tillery (Cooper). On March 16, 2015, God opened his arms and said, "My daughter enter into the joy of the Lord to receive your crown."

Cassandra was educated in the Edgecombe County School systems and was a proud graduate of G.W. Carver High School, Pinetops, NC. It is there in home Economics, under the instruction of Mrs. Dorothy Gilliam, Sandy would be able to nurture her love and creativity for all things beautiful. After graduating from high school, Sandy's entrepreneurial spirit and desire to sew for others led her to work for many years at Tiffany's Bridal World & Tailoring Shop." Throughout the years, Sandy's gift for all things lovely and her creative way of making hard work fun would make her a successful businesswoman – a woman before her time – a Bridal Consultant Extraordinaire before the term was ever coined. She continued to inspire others by developing their creativity and business aspirations. Sandy's genuine love and her un-canning ability to make everyone and anyone feel unique in their very own way would eventually lead her to be recognized throughout the East Coast (from Maryland to Miami – she would create a flower, a gown or centerpiece like none other). Over the years, her work has been featured in news articles. Sandy was an intricate part of the lives of many brides and families who would become more than clients, but friends and extended family.

Finding Christ at an early age, she joined Thornes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Later, Sandy continued her Christian walk as a very active member of New Hope Baptist Church and St. John Baptist Church of Stony Creek, Virginia. A devoted member Sandy orchestrated many church programs, most notably her "Get on the Boat" Service. Most recently, she was a member of Peace Church of Wilson, NC.

Sandy's caring heart and giving nature always extended to children and was never more evident as she cherished each of them as her own. One of her greatest memories and life achievements was the birth of her and Willie Stith, Sr.'s (deceased) son Willie Garland Stith, Jr. Although well-known and loved in Virginia, Rocky Mount would always be home. Sandy eventually moved closer to home to be with family and to continue to make everything she touched beautiful.

Praises to God for her journey was usual for Sandy. When the doctors said she would not live through the horrific automobile accident and later, cancer, Sandy testified, "God said, I have the last words." Sandy continuously gave God "Hallelujah" praises for the blessings in her life.

Sandy leaves to cherish memories her caring, devoted, and beloved husband Willie Currie, son Willie Garland Stith, Jr. (Monica) (Greenville), mother Annie Pearl Cooper (Rocky Mount); father William Tillery, Jr. (Vernell) (Rocky Mount), two sisters, Rev. Gardenia T. Bulluck (Sylvester) (Miramar, FL) and Keshia Battle (Rocky Mount), two brothers, Rev. Roderick L. Tillery Sr. (Renee) (Rocky Mount) and Max Gregory Harrison (Denise) (Hampton, VA); stepdaughters Monique Lee (Glenn) and LaShawnon Battle (Laforn), both of Wilson; stepson Gregory Currie (Sharon) (Greensboro, NC); stepsisters Doris Powell (Herman) and Charlene Cooper, both of Rocky Mount, foster children Leola, Solomon, Boaz, all of Virginia and William (deceased). Sandy was preceded in death by her brother William Bernard Tillery. She also leaves to cherish one uncle, Percy Lucas (Mary) (Rocky Mount), a loving god mother, Ernestine Thorne (Rocky Mount), a special great-aunt, Beulah Armstrong (Sharpsburg); brother in-laws George and Alvin Currie, sister in-laws, Shelia, Shirley, Nettie, Leegretta, Sarah, Ida, Georgia, and a special in-law Viola Shands (Ralph); close friends Nannie Arrington and Beulah Battle; and special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Homegoing services will be held Monday March 23, 2015 at 11 a.m. At the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 652 West Raleigh Blvd., Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted with the staff of Hunter-Odom in Rocky Mount, Virginia.

My heart is really hurting now. Sandy was such a sweet person. We talked often, she would call me for advice and ideals on decorating, and I could call her. She always greeted me with "Hi precious" She had such a great spirit. Always the same! I loved her, and will truly miss her.
