I was 7 when I met the Horne's in the mid 70's. My oldest sister Eleanor took business class from him & typing from Mrs Horne. This gracious man invited our multi-ethnic family to his farm. My daddy cut down tall trees on the land that Mr Horne was clearing. The wood was to be burned to keep our house warm during the winters. My mother would build a fire & make green tea, coffee, ramen noodles and Japanese sweet potatoes in the hot ashes. My daddy worked the chainsaw and Eleanor, my other sister Lucille and I would help. I strayed away often to explore the natural beauty of the land. After my sisters went to college, daddy, mama & I continued to go to the farm to cut wood. A large barn appeared on the cleared land followed by an impressive long chicken coop. There were plenty of tall trees further away from the house that daddy began clearing. I played with dozens of hunting dogs that were each lavished with the comfort of their own personal doghouses. The dogs wagged their tails in utter happiness. Sometimes there were puppies too! Mr Horne proudly showed us how his dogs pointed the quail out in the field. He also let the puppies run around. Lots of chickens and other fowl to chase and be chased. My last visit to the farm was in 1984. Mr Horne invited me and my first boyfriend to ride his horses. What a fun and beautiful day! How humbled and overwhelmed I was to see Mr & Mrs Horne at my mama's funeral two years ago. He hadn't changed a bit. He just stood right in front of me smiling, not saying a word, and that's all it took. He was exactly the same! I showed them a picture in the photo album of my mama's life - a beaming Mr Horne holding the hand of his first born daughter. Those simple times had such an impact on our family. I hugged the Horne's and cherished this moment with happy tears. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Mrs Horne as she and her family grieve. Mr Horne, what a wonderful, generous and funny man. If you ever need a smile, think about Chuck Horne. God bless Betty Horne and the Horne family. All my love, Belle Ann Apodaca

So sorry to hear of Chuck passing on. He was always a great friend of the family and will be greatly missed. It didn't matter if we were fishing on the Bay or Nottoway, or just helping around the farm, he always made it an adventure.

This is a great photo of Uncle Richard. I loved the way his eyes twinkled when he was telling a story and the smirk he would have because he amused himself that we believed what he was saying. When he would then laugh out loud it was the best because he knew he fooled you...again! With love to the family.
