Looking back to a month ago, it is still difficult to accept the loss of David. He was my “twin,” as we were born on the same day - but six years apart. Visiting with him in mid-July, David was ready to start a new chapter in his life. His divorce was almost final, he had found a home in Petersburg that he was preparing to close on, and he had transferred Malik from Virginia State University to Virginia Commonwealth University.

Life was good, and he was moving to a place of peace and contentment.

The weekend of July 12th, we spent time going to the Shoe Carnival (he said, “I need some green sneakers to go with my green shorts”), stopping by the storage unit to pay (late) on the rental fees, then we went over to the Petersburg National Battlefield and walked around, taking in the battlements, the soldier's winter lodgings for the siege of Petersburg, the Crater, and walking to the back gate of Ft. Lee. He spoke to the park ranger and offered to volunteer as a guide. We drove over to the house he was eyeing at 430 Greenwood Drive in Petersburg, and I recalled the pictures he had sent in May of this 2-story brick home, with wood floors throughout, and an enclosed sunporch. While we couldn't get inside, we walked around the outside, and he talked about how he was going to pave a driveway to the rear of the house, and later build a garage. He also showed me where he wanted to put a generator, and asked me about landscaping, low-maintenance plants & flowers, and whether he should put in a small patio off the deck. Later, we stopped by a Jamaican restaurant to get his favorite jerk chicken dinner for take out.

On Tuesday I headed out on my way to a week-long conference in Maryland, and later, on the way back home, I sent him a text thanking him for the “Popeyes.” His last message to me on July 23, 2014 was “Have a safe drive.”

When Wayne called me, saying that David had passed, I was incredulous, and kept repeating, “But I was just there - I had just seen him!” But it didn't matter - David's duty was done and it was time for him to move on.

Wayne & Barb, Tonya, and I represented our siblings at David's funeral service. We chose to respect his memory and give back to him, for all that he had given to others.

There are no words to express the feeling of loss. Dave was a friend and someone I could always count on when I needed him. Sometimes it was just a phone call from Dave saying "I haven't talked to you in a while, what's up", other times it was our cheap lunch date with Robyn Underwood that brought me joy and certainly laughter. And laugh we did, until tears ran down our face. Those tears are here now, but for the loss of a dear friend. How proud Dave was of his service to his country but his greatest pride was in his children. We have lost a good man, one who left family and friends missing him. He will live on in our memories and in our heart. Fair winds and calm sea's my friend as you continue your journey in heaven.
