To my sister Charlene, Bob, Richard, Chris, Chuck, and all the Sloan families. I know your hearts are sad and hurting, so is mine. I was remembering about the time Doc let me come to live with him and sis when I needed a less stessful homelife. I was 12 years old. I never heard him complain about me being there. The only 2 things he ever required of me was to learn his serial number which I still remember after 59 years. The other thing was to learn how to spit shine my shoes. He would stand behind me telling me how to spit and rub those shoes until I could see my refelction in them. One time Sis and I were shining Doc's 4 pair of boots and we ran out of saliva. We had been told that rubbing alcohol worked just as good and no one would be able to tell the difference. When Doc got home we told him we shined all his boots. He took one look and said "You used rubbing alcohol, didn't you?". We never used it after that. One thing I couldn't understand about Doc was that he was afraid to get up on a roof but yet he was brave enough to jump out of airplanes. I wish I could be there for the memorial but please know that all of you are in my thoughts. Take comfort in the fact that so many people loved him and will miss him. Ron and I are 2 of them. Doc called me his girl and I called him my pappy. Sending all of you our sympathy and love.

To the Sloan family:
It was my honor, to have known a man that became Pappaw to me and my children. A few years ago I was chosen to help take care of him, to get him healthy, and to
keep him happy. Little did I know that to know him was to love him. He ended up mentoring me. I now know about John Deeres, How to tinker with electric scooters and how to wire lifts on cars. In addition I know how to replace a toilet, faucets, and exhaust fans in the restroom, and I will say that we tried a thousand times to replace the light sensor on the front porch light, because he knew where there was a will there was a way! These things may in some way be small but truthfully what he did was made me believe that I could do anything. He was famous for makeing you belive that fear was a choice. How many times did we all hear
"My pretty girl can do anything!" Pappa became like a father to me for these reasons. I will think of him each and every day, and love him until the day we meet again, because surely he was an Angel who walked with us on Earth!
I will miss my daily phone call to see how me and each and every member of my family are doing. I will miss our daily game of cards, our working in the yard, our going for a ride to talk about something that he needed to work out, and even that cotton picking light sensor! But most of all I will miss him being with his mammaw, because I know how very much he loved her.

Dear Sis, Bob, Richard, Chris, and Chuck, and all the Sloan famlies. I know your hearts are sad and hurting . So is mine. I was remembering when Doc let me come live with him and Sis when I needed a calmer home life. I was 12 years old. I never EVER heard him complain about me being there. There was only 2 things that he required me to do. I had to learn his serial number which I still remember after 59 years. The other thing he made me learn was how to spit shine my shoes. There was one time when Sis and I ran out of saliva for Doc's 4 pair of boots. We used rubbing alcohol hoping he wouldn't know the difference. He came home, took one look at the boots, and said, "You used rubbing alcohol, didn't you?". We didn't use it anymore after that. I wish I could be there for the Memorial Service, but know that all of you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take comfort in the fact that so many people loved this man. Uncle Ronnie and I are 2 of them. Sending all of you our love and sympathy.

My Uncle Doc didn't know a stranger, and treated family members like gold. I remember as a second lieutenant spedind the weekend with Uncle Doc and Aunt Charlene and getting the best advice from 1SG a lt. could get. He was a great man with a big heart, and will be missed by everyone who came in contact with him. He loved his boys, and their families and couldn't talk about Charlene without getting a tear in his eye and saying what a great Mom and wife she is. Uncle Doc will be missed by all his family back in Missouri, and missed by myself as he was like a second Dad to me. He was respected and loved by everyone he touched, may he rest in peace.

I'll never forget the first time I met Don. It was 1973. I had just joined the Petersburg Pd. and I was at Sloan's on East Washington Street on business. When I walked in that office the first thing I noticed was the huge 1st Sergeant name plate on his desk and having just departed the military myself, I felt at home. Over the next 20 years my relationship with Don became one of me being in awe of one of the finest men I have ever known and I hope he developed a little regards for me too. Since I retired from the Pd. in 1993, I have not seen my good friend as often as I would have liked, but time, nor can death steal those memories. My most sincere condolenses to his wife, to Bob, Richard, Chuck and especially Chris and all of the grandchildren. We all have lost a great man. May God welcome Don with the dignity and respect he deserves and may he comfort you all during this time of bereavement.
