HARRY BRADLEY Obituary

Celebrating of life for Mr. Harry James Bradley, "Coach Brad."

According to the Divine Plan, one comes on to the stage of life, plays a role, and passes on.

Harry James Bradley Sr., son of the late Joseph Sidney and Mary Alice Bradley, was born March 11, 1945, in Hopewell, Va. On Thursday, July 3, 2014, Harry finished his task here on Earth. He answered the call and left behind a legacy of love, humility, and service to his family, friends and community. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and coach.

Harry graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School in 1963 and attended Saint Paul's College, Lawrenceville, Va., where he received a bachelor of science in elementary education in 1967. He later received a master's in administration and supervision from Virginia State University in 1977. Harry is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

Harry had an extensive history of community involvement, starting in 1967, when he became a teacher at his alma mater, Carter G. Woodson. He also started his coaching career in 1967 as the J.V. head coach and varsity assistant at Hopewell High School. He continued his coaching career at the collegiate level at Virginia State University, St. Paul's College and North Carolina Central University. He later returned to the VHSL and retired from the Petersburg Public School System as athletic director in 2007, but continued to serve as an advisor.

Harry leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife, Shirley Woodley Bradley; and four devoted children, Tonya Yvette Bradley-Brown (Hertch), Harry James Bradley II (Joy), Tiffany Ledorene Bradley Johnson (Marcus) and Wesley Lawrence Bradley; grandchildren, Amber Camille Bradley, Harry James Bradley III, Sydney Sahara Brown, Adrianna LaShay Morse, A'Niyah Syncere Johnson, Christian Bradley Brown, Austin Bernard Johnson and Ayden Miles Johnson; brother, Joseph Bradley Jr. (Hester); sisters, Catherine Perry, Ethel Robinson (Paul), Martha Jackson (Ben), Mary Carter (Kenneth, deceased). He was preceded in death by brothers, Joesph Louis Bradley and Linwood Allen Bradley, deceased (Juanita); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be a viewing on Friday starting at 4 p.m., at First Baptist Church of City Point, and a memorial tribute from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at noon at Hopewell High School gymnasium. Interment services will be immediately following the funeral at Appomattox Cemetery, Hopewell, Va.

Professional services are entrusted to Metropolitan Funeral Service, Portsmouth, Va. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.
