Joseph Gholson Obituary


Mr. Joseph Greenhill Gholson Sr., ""Joe"", 83, of 16406 Courthouse Road, Dinwiddie, Va., passed away suddenly Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010.

He was born Feb. 12, 1927, to the late Greenhill and Emily Gholson. He is proceeded in death by his son, Joseph Greenhill Gholson Jr. (Jody); sisters, Vernell Bonner, Gladys Gales and Edith Hanes-El; and brothers, James, Emmitt and Lee Gholson. At an early age he joined Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va.

Joe was a very sociable person who enjoyed being in the presence of his family and friends. He retired from Brown & Williams Tobacco Co. He was the manager of the D.C. Keds softball team and a dedicated fan of the D.C. Giants baseball team. He was a member of DeWitt Hunting Club and C.V. Wilson Masonic Lodge #317. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Joe leaves to cherish his memories of 55 years, his wife and life-long partner, Ruby Jones Gholson of Dinwiddie, Va.; five daughters, Carolyn Demps (Ernest) of San Diego, Gail Gholson of Petersburg, Va., Sharon Gholson, Claudette Gholson (Shelton) and Robin Jordan (Francis), all of Dinwiddie, Va.; three sons, Keith Gholson (Lisa) of Dinwiddie, Va., Kenneth Gholson of Hopewell, Va., and Wayne Gholson (Yolanda) of Dinwiddie, Va.; one foster son, George Boose Jr.; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Mitchell, Beatrice Taylor and Lucy Wyatt, all of Dinwiddie, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Joan Gholson, Anita Jones (Willie), Janet Brown (Sherman) and Marquerite Jones, all of Petersburg, Va.; four brothers-in-law, William Thomas of Petersburg, Clarence Jones (Helen) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Edward Jones (Brenda) Petersburg, Va., Herman Jones (Carolyn) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends, a devoted cousin, Bernard Morgan, and devoted friends, James Bonner, Melvin Ellis, Evan Bolling and Courtney Faulcon.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, with the pastor, the Rev. Kevin Northam, officiating, and the Rev. Carlos Jordan, pastor of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, McKenney, eulogizing. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the McKenney Chapel of Johnson Funeral Home. The family will assemble at 12:15 p.m. at the residence for the procession on the day of the service.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the J.M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, 11107 Doyle Blvd., McKenney, 804-478-4411.
