Laurance Matthews Obituary

Laurance Leslie Matthews Jr., age 66, of Stony Creek, Va., passed away at the Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va., on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010.

Mr. Matthews was the son of the late Laurance Leslie Matthews Sr. and Florence Tereschenko Matthews. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Lee Matthews. Mr. Matthews was a member of Faith Community Church, Yale, Va. He was retired as general manager of Colonial Honda in Petersburg, Va., in December 2004, and was employed by Carter Myers and Associates for 35 years. Mr. Matthews was an active member of his community and served on the Stony Creek Community Health Center and the Sussex Courthouse Fire Department. He served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Automotive Dealers Association, the Virginia Motor Vehicle Dealer Board, and the Grants Committee of the Cameron Foundation.

Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Price Matthews; son, Ricky Matthews and wife, Robyn; daughter, Cheryl F. Matthews; grandsons, Hunter and Ryan Love; granddaughter, Kaylen Matthews; brother, James M. Matthews and wife, Pat; niece, Kara Matthews; nephews, Jim, Patrick and Steven Matthews; and a brother-in-law, William P. Price and wife, Vicky. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to his devoted caregiver, Melvin Boone.

They will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, in the funeral home chapel with interment following in the Readville Baptist Church Cemetery, Sussex, Va. Contributions may be sent to the Stony Creek Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 38, Stony Creek, VA 23882, or to the Sussex Courthouse Fire Department, P.O. Box 1363, Sussex, VA 23884. Mr. Matthews always seemed to have a smiling face. I saw him often as he rode his grandkids around the courthouse complex on the weekends, and he always waved to me, and they all had a great time. I will miss him, and know his family will cherish all the great memories they have.

Altough i only met Mr.Mattews one time at Jimmy"s garage - ive known ricky for years with he being fire chief in the courthouse and i in emporia. For anyone who knows me i owe jimmmy mattews more than any one young man can repay - he took me in 11 years ago and showed me everything about business ; and how to be a better person , and a father he has been - i wish i could take the pain away but as jimmy has told me many times - thats life - be good to people and you'll be okay .
