Melvin Thorpe Obituary

Melvin R. Thorpe of 506 Lock Lane, Petersburg, was summoned by the highest order on Saturday, May 26, 2007. He was surrounded by family, friends and loved ones when God in His infinite wisdom dispatched one of His angels to deliver our beloved son, brother, husband and father "Cool" Melvin. The angels' order solicited "Cool" from his earthly home to his heavenly home for rest.

He was born Nov. 25, 1960, to Harold L. and Laura P. Brooks of Petersburg. He was a 1979 graduate of Dinwiddie High School. "Cool" was a member of St. Peters R.Z.U.A. Church, Church Road, where the Rev. Dr. Alvera Jaratt Parris is pastor. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Criss B. and Irene Thorpe of Church Road, as well as his paternal grandmother, Mary Brooks of Petersburg.

He leaves to cherish loving memories; his devoted wife of 24 years, Velda M. Thorpe of Petersburg; three devoted children; two daughters, Shaykia Mathis and Shanekia Thorpe of Petersburg, and a son, Jerome Mathis of Houston; a special placeholder in his life was his only grandson, LeDonta Johnson Jr., and two godsons, Sincere Harrison and Tre'Wayne Davis, all of Petersburg; one goddaughter, Wayneque Davis of Petersburg; one sister, France Thorpe (Gilbert) whom will miss him dearly; three very sad-hearted brothers, James (Martha), Travis (Crystal) and Matthew Pegram (Tara), all of Petersburg; seven nieces, whom he loved dearly, are to include Markia, Desiree, Jasmine, Keonia, Toneka, Tierra and Bre'onda; five nephews that cherished him, Matthew of Georgia, James, TyQuonne, Wayne and Melvin, all of Petersburg; two great-nephews, Quinton and Khamaree of Petersburg; six aunts, Irene Bland, Clara Bland, Beulah Jones, Alma Manson and Betty Link of Petersburg and Shirley Robinson (Raymond) of Claremont; three uncles, Andrew (Helen) and James Thorpe (Paulette) of Petersburg and Criss Thorpe (Joyce) of Disputanta; two sisters-in-law, Angela Davis (Michael) and Yolanda Mathis; three brothers-in-law, Frederic Davis, James Mathis and Rodney Mathis (Delores), all of Petersburg; and a host of devoted cousins, relatives and friends, among them the very devoted Joe Scott and Quinton Scott of Petersburg.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 30 at West End Baptist Church, Dinwiddie. The remains will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. until the hour of services. Relatives and friends will assemble at the residence, 506 Lock Lane, Petersburg, at noon, in loving memory.

Remains rest at the Tuckers Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg, A.A. Tucker, funeral director.
