MINNIE E. HERBERT

Minnie Eva Herbert was called to Heaven on May 3, 2017, at Dinwiddie Health & Rehab Center. She was born July 8, 1928, in New York City, New York, the daughter of Frank and Alberta Edmonds and lived primarily in Harlem, New York, as a child and young adult.

Minnie went to Seward Park High School on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York, and graduated as valedictorian in 1947. On July 9, 1950, she was united in marriage to Johnny Robert Herbert ("Brother") in New York. They lived in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. She worked as a telephone operator and as a travel agent, for which she won many awards for her excellent work. After they retired, they moved to Petersburg, Va., to be closer to family and friends. Minnie loved to travel and has circled the globe, visiting many countries including England, France, Bermuda, Greece, Jamaica, Spain, Mexico, and Canada. She especially enjoyed taking cruises to the Caribbean.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brothers, John Arthur Edmonds and Frank Edmonds Jr.

She is survived by her children, Sherelle Lynette Harden and her husband Byron, and Johnny Keith Herbert and his wife, Wanda; her grandchildren, William James Anderson III ("BJ") and his wife Brandee, Porschia Harden, and Merci Harden; her great-grandchildren, Maya Harden and Torian Gibbs; and her goddaughters, Sandra Givens and Mary Drayton; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A public viewing will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the J.L. Dodson and Sons Funeral Establishment. Funeral service for Minnie E. Herbert will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church Of God In Christ, 233 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va. Prophet Byron Harden of Zion Cathedral Church Of God In Christ, officiating. Interment will follow in SouthLawn Memorial Park , South Prince George, Va. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the Church at 12:45 p.m. on the day of the service.
