Roberta Bacon Obituary

Roberta Lee Robinson Bacon , 81, peacefully passed into eternal rest at The Retreat Hospital, in Richmond, Va., on Friday, April 27, 2012.

She was the middle of three children born to Robert and Nannie Robinson.

Roberta was born and raised in Saxe, Va. Her children never tired of hearing stories of her childhood memories, growing up as a country girl at the family homestead, "The Ranch."

Roberta graduated from Fayetteville College (now University) in Early Childhood Education. As a star student, she fulfilled her student teaching at the selective Fayetteville Laboratory School. Because of her exemplary performance, she was asked to teach in a much needed school district in Georgia. Here in McDuffie County, Ga., she met her husband of 50 years, Delmus D. Bacon, who preceded her in death in 2004. They moved to Sussex County, Va., in 1965 where Roberta taught for three years until the family's move to Ettrick in 1968. Roberta taught in the Dinwiddie County Public School system until her retirement in 1990. She continued to substitute teach in various local schools. In fact, she had a teaching engagement the day of her sudden illness.

Roberta and family joined Gillfield Baptist Church. As a devout member, she served as a member of the Deacon's Auxiliary, chair of the Greeter's ministry and worked with vacation bible school each summer. Roberta could be seen faithfully sitting on the left side of church, wearing one of her beautiful hats, for which she was well known. She had a vibrant personality and loved to laugh. Roberta was feisty, fun loving and enjoyed doing nice things for people even without them knowing of her deeds. As a proud mother, Roberta adored her children and was their greatest supporter.

Roberta leaves to cherish her memory her six joys, Phyllis Bacon, Delma Davis, Beryl Washington, Robert Bacon, Jacqueline Townes, and Raymond Bacon; one son-in-law, Ernest Washington; one daughter-in law, Sylvia Bacon; 11 grandchildren, Cherelle, Ernest II, Kelsey, Jillian, Troy, Morgan, Jocelynn, Robert II, Tyler, Jarrett and Preston; two brothers, Donald Robinson and Paul Morton; one sister, Agnes Randolph; honorary son, Charles Grier; nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Gillfield Baptist Church, Petersburg. Dr. George C. Lyons, the pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. There will be a wake at noon at Gillfield prior to the service.

Mrs. Bacon was a frequent "substitute" teacher where I was a school librarian. I appreciated how she came dressed up for school, and always a smile. When her children visited the library she marched them in quietly and told me they were practicing beging "good citizens." and was hoping for a good report. She leaves pleasant memories of my teaching years.

Elementary teachers are often the most influential people during adolescence. I was fortunate to not only have been instructed, but inspired during her tenure at A.H. Jones Elementary in Stony Creek,VA. Both Principal & Mrs. Bacon encouraged us to literally "be all the student we could be." To Delma and the rest of the family, may the love of friends the peace of our Lord comfort you during the mourning and celebration of her life.

Mrs.Bacon will be dearly missed. She would sub in my room whenever I called. The students enjoyed being around her and they loved the piggy banks they would get from her. She would leave little goodies on my desk for me too. She always remembered that I needed a new pocket calendar each year and she recently brought in several for me this year. She gave from her heart and cared so much for the childern. She will always hold a special memory in my heart. I would like to give my condolences to the family for the loss of your loved one.

Mrs. Bacon taught during my third grade year at Eastside Elementary and it is the best memory I have of my years in school. She is one of the primary reasons I became an elementary teacher. There is a note that she wrote on one of my assignments that I have to this day framed and hanging on my office wall, it sustains me on the days that I feel less than accomplished. She treated us all as special individuals. Mrs. Bacon will be missed dearly.
