Samuel Scott Obituary

Samuel "Sam" Fleming Scott Jr., 69, of Petersburg departed this life Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at Waverly Healthcare Center, Waverly. Sam was a native of Durham, North Carolina and the son of the late Samuel F. and Mary Atwater Scott. He received his formal education in Durham, N.C. and graduated from Hillside High School in 1956. Sam continued his education and graduated from North Carolina Central University (North Carolina Central College) in 1960. He taught in the Prince George County school system (J.E.J. Moore High School) for several years after graduation. Sam later worked for IBM Corporation until his retirement in 1992. After relocating to Petersburg in 1993 he taught in the Petersburg public school system. Sam was a member of the North Carolina Central Alumni of the Petersburg Tri-City area.

Sam leaves to cherish his memories; a loving and devoted wife, Vivian; a son, Ronald B. Robertson, II (Iola) of Richmond; a daughter, Mia Scott of Hinesville, Ga.; mother-in-law, Mary J. Bland, and a sister-in-law, Jacquelyn B. Monroe, both of Petersburg; a brother-in-law, Junius W. Bland II of Prince George; six grandchildren; an aunt, Evelyn Sellers (Woody) of Durham, N.C.; a niece, Chrystal B. Barnwell (Benjiman) of Petersburg; several cousins, friends and extended family; special friends Emit Browne of Boston, MA and William Arthur Smith of Durham, N.C.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, from the Chapel of William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home. Rev. William N. Bland, Jr. will officiate. The Entombment will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, in Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong, Petersburg. The family request in lieu of flowers please consider contributions in Sam's memory to Liberty Dialysis Center, 3400 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.
