When I was about 11-12 my dad,Arthur Firman, took our whole family to visit his Aunt Mae in Cranston RI. While we were there we met more relatives, Aunt Alice and her family. While we were there we met many cousins and the place we met had the most marvelous climbing tree. Aunt Alice told us all about a radio personality relative. She had a whole room, his office, with memorabilia and awards for radio.

junior English, Warwick Vets, 1958. No nonsense in her class - discipline with a smile. The best English teacher we ever had. The kind sadly lacking in today's public schools.

My deepest sympahties to Alice's family. We had many conversations at St. Peter's Church. She always had a smile on her face and a funny anecdote to share.

The BEST ever English teacher. I was so pleased to get her mailing address recently and send her a letter telling her what a great teacher she was. I was her student back in the 50's when Gorton was a junior/senior high school. Whenever I hear a politician or newsperson make a blatant grammatical error, I always think. Miss Hurl must be cringing! So pleased to attend her funeral mass which was a beautiful tribute to her.

The millions who read The Providence Visitor with ease for years salute you. The writers and editor whose prose you scrubbed, occasionally rewarded with grumbles or growls, now bow in respectful silence. From the Brown with whom you taught, and the ones you taught, and myself so privileged to have you at my copy desk, thank you. My condolences to all who mourn your loss.

Miss Hurl was our yearbook advisor in 1963 ... When she called me into her office l quaked in fear! I was sure she found me lacking. I was in total awe of her...instead of firing me ..she made me the editor. It was one of finer moments being judged competent by that excellent woman. Miss Hurl an inspiration. I was honored to know and work with her, my condolences to her family.

Alice was a wonderful mentor and cherished friend who took me under her wing at the former Providence Visitor. I will never forget her gentle spirit, wonderful sense of humor and generosity. I will remember her every time I look at the beautiful border collie figurine that she bought for me during one of her many trips to Scotland. Rest in peace, my good friend. I will always love you.

Miss Hurl was a teacher not many of us will forget. She was strict but I am sure it was needed and we all survived thru our senior year. Wish my kids had teachers like her. I think she had each of the Woulfe children in her class thru our years at Pilgrim. I had her in my senior year class of 1978. Our prayers are with Miss Hurl an her family.

I remember Miss Hurl so very well from my early teaching days. I "subbed" at Pilgrim many times and always appreciated the help and support (as well as valuable and much-needed encouragement)that stood me in good stead for the rest of my teaching career. The faculty and students had high praise for her and obvious respect and affection. My sincere condolences to her family.

I'll never forget my English teacher Alice Hurl at Warwick Vets and her gorgeous red hair. She was devoted to her job and her students. Alice was a truly dedicated teacher and gave her students 110%. I even remember one of the homework papers coming back with a "Good girl, Al" written on it. She was also a dedicated faculty advisor to the yearbook staff that year Class of 1959. Ironic I happened to be in R.I. on 5/20/13. I live in California. I salute you, Alice. My condolences to your wonderful family.
