Lt. Col. (Ret) Charles W. Weitzel Jr.

Charles Weitzel Obituary

WEITZEL, CHARLES W. JR; LT. COLONEL USAFR (RET) 86 of Wakefield, RI died on July 14, 2008. Born in Wilton, CT, he was the son of the late Charles, Sr. and Elizabeth (Becker) Weitzel. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia (Runyon) Weitzel.

Mr. Weitzel was a 1940 graduate of St. Luke's School (New Canaan,CT) and attended Lafayette College where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, and after winning his pilot's wings, became a B-24 pilot with the 15th Air Force, based in Italy.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with oak leaf clusters for his participation in 35 missions in bombing assaults against Munich, Vienna, Linz, and Blechhammer.

After his military discharge, he worked with his father as a mechanical contractor. In 1985, he and his wife moved to Kingston, RI.

As a retired Lt.Colonel, he became active in civic and veterans' affairs. He was a Past Commander of Post 916, and was a member of Reserve Officers of America and Military Officers of America Association.

He was also employed as Minimum Housing Inspector for the town of South Kingstown. He was a volunteer at South County Museum and served on the Governor's Commission on Lead Paint.

Mr. Weitzel leaves behind one son, Robert W. Weitzel of Narragansett, RI; a daughter, Mary Jane Glanz of Bridgeport, CT; a daughter, Ann Runyon Weed of Ridgefield, CT. He was also the beloved grandfather of Wendy Harco of Danbury, CT and John(Jack) Weitzel of Narragansett, RI. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Alison Ann and Peter Paul Harco IV of Danbury, CT. He was the brother of Mary Spitzer of Ridgefield, CT,and Helen Chapman of Houston, TX and the late Elizabeth Bloomer of Ridgefield, CT.

Mr Weitzel will be buried with full military honors on July 26, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the Rhode Island Veterans' Cemetery, Exeter, RI. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be sent to: VNS Home Health Services, 14 Woodruff Ave. Suite 7, Narragansett, RI 02882
