David Greer Obituary

GREER, DAVID, MD 89, died Tuesday November 18, 2014. He was husband of the late Marion (Clarich) Greer; they were married for 64 years. Born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Jacob and Mary Greenberg, he had been a resident of Fall River since 1957. Dr. Greer received his education in the New York City school system, Brooklyn College, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Chicago, and Yale University. His education was interrupted during World War II when he served two years in the armed forces as an aviation cadet. Dr. Greer came to Fall River in 1957 to practice medicine at the Truesdale Clinic. He was actively involved in a very large number of community and state wide activities ranging from voluntary service with several Fall River agencies (the District Nursing Association, the Family Service Association, and the Fall River Housing Authority) to membership on several gubernatorial commissions and the Board of Trustees for both Bristol Community College and U. Mass Dartmouth whose Board he chaired in 1973 and 1974. In the early 1970's, while he was President of the Medical Staff of the Truesdale Hospital and Medical Director of the Earle E. Hussey Hospital, Dr. Greer founded Highland Heights Apartments, renamed Cardinal Medeiros Towers, which was the first hospital-connected public housing facility in the nation for the physically impaired. In 1974, Dr. Greer joined the administration and faculty of the new medical school at Brown University as an Associate Dean. There, he founded and chaired the Department of Family Medicine, the Department of Community Health, and the Gerontology Center. He was appointed Dean of Medicine at Brown in 1981 and served in that position until 1992. Upon retiring from Brown, he served as the Medical Director of the SSTAR Family Healthcare Center in Fall River until 1998. Dr. Greer was a member of numerous prestigious organizations including Mastership in the American College of Physicians and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and was designated as a Kellogg Foundation Fellow in International Health. His many honors and awards included an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Southeastern Massachusetts University; the Cutting Foundation Award for service to religion in society from the Andover Newton Theological Seminary; the Bristol Community College Distinguished Service Award; the University of Chicago Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award, and the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Jewish Veteran's Auxiliary. Dr. Greer was a founding director of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. He is survived by his daughter; Linda Greer and her husband Mike Tilchin of Bethesda, MD, his grandchildren Ross and Carla Tilchin, his daughter in law Nancy Smith Greer, his sister-in-law Joyce Greer Stern, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Daniel and Eleanor Clarich. He was the father of the late Jeffrey Greer, and brother of the late M. Philip Greer. His wife Marion died only seven weeks ago. Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 21st at 10:00 AM at Temple Beth El, 385 High St., Fall River. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Family Service Association of Fall River, 101 Rock Street, Fall River, MA 02720. Dear David - only you could appreciate this. I went to send you that long thought about, but never written email today ( Jan 22 2018). Something forced me just to "google" you to see that you were still there in FallRiver. Then the painful pause as I read of your passing. My heart is sad. I am sad. So, let me proceed as I would have in my never-sent email. "Dear David, Just checking in after an embarrassingly long time to see how you are. I've just left full time teaching at Hunter and wanted to say how much you and what you taught me at Brown has been on my mind and has guided me. I carry your wisdom with me and have often quoted your "think horses, not zebras" saying to my students. Our book continues to sell and be read! With your name on it how could it not? Aside from that it's a grey day here in NYC but I'm already looking forward to spring...and of course hearing from you.
Always,
Christina

David and Marion were kind and caring persons, we shared an MSU fellowship from '86 to '89 and one of the best experiences has been knowing them and receiving them in our house in Buenos Aires.

I was a young nursing student in 1957 at Truesdale Hospital when Dr. Greer came to Fall River. We had a close professional relationship that continued for over 20 years and I quickly came to recognize his outstanding ability as a diagnostician and humanitarian. The Truesdale Hospital "family' included so many dedicated physicians-none more so respected and revered by patients and staff than Dave Greer. Fall River has been enriched by the presence of this man in our community.
My deepest condolences to the Greer family. Mary Ann Wordell

I feel personally blessed to have known both David and Marion. His obituary makes clear how much he accomplished and the degree to which the Fall River community and the Brown University Medical School were blessed by his involvement. It also reminds us of how much David and the world he influenced were blessed by the shared love that bonded David and Marion. It is their blessing that they only had to be separated for seven weeks.

YMCA Southcoast and the Fall River Y will be forever in Dr. Greer's debt for his willingness to help lead the effort as Honorary Chair to rebuild the Y in downtown Fall River. We were blessed have his presence at the Y's Squash court ribbon cutting event on October 27th where he shared his memories of time spend with dear friends at the Y. Our deepest condolences are extended to his family and loved ones.

I was a young nursing student when Dr. Green came to Union Hospital in 1958. He was a brilliant, kind and caring physician. He was respectful of all and was the consummate professional. I shall never forget the young mother he diagnosed with a pheochromocytoma. His scientific background and his keen observation of patient symptoms saved her. This was the art and science of medicine. We were all delighted with this outcome and recognized that he would be a leader in the health care system. He truly believed that all individuals had a right to health care and worked tirelessly in education and service to guarantee health care to all. Dr. Greer left an indelible mark on the city and its citizens. Fall River has lost a great humanitarian and a national treasure.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of both David and Marion. My late parents, Philip and Evelyn Sacknoff thought the world of them and treasured their friendship. Thinking of you.

Dr. Greer was a major influence in my life. He recognized my potential and gave a kid from the south side of Fall River a chance I thought I would never have. Even after many years had passed he still willingly provided me with sage advice only Dr. Greer could have provided. Dr. Greer was a physician and a healer. I will forever be indebted to the man and his memory. Dr. Brian J. Ribeiro, Midland, GA.

I owe my professional life to Dr Greer. Everyone matures at different ages, for me it was sophomore year of college. My first year at Boston University, I was caught up in the "college experience" and did not apply myself. I knew I had to get all A's to make up for it and I did. I was rejected from every medical school I applied to except one. I don't know how Dr Greer saw my potential and I never asked him, however because of him, I was accepted to Brown. I couldn't ask for a better life and other than my parents, Dr Greer's decision over 30 years ago, made the greatest impact on it. I could never repay him enough, I can only hope that entries like mine give you some measure of comfort during this time. Please accept my sincerest condolences. He was a great man. If allowed and if someone could email me the address, I would be honored to attend the shiva. [email protected]
