Dear Barbara, (and family)

I've been holding off on writing for want of some words which will make sense. I can't find any except that I am so so deeply sorry and saddened by the news of Doug's death. It feels like a lifetime since we were together, virtualy related, with Jane, Chuck, Donald, Jill, and the whole gang.

I will always remember Doug as the true geniune grounded yet elegant gentleman he was and how he shared that everyday with the world. His legacy is one for you and all his family to be proud of. I will miss him, yet never forget him.

Sincere condolences to you, your boys and entire family.

With much affection,

Peter Manzo

(Shirl and I, though no longer living together, will grieve Doug's loss in our hearts, and keep his memory alive in our souls)

My deepest sympathy goes to the White family. I lived on Red Chimney Dr. (#77) as a child and I remember riding my bike and seeing Doug doing yard work one day. He was a great news anchor and a well respected individual. I've always been a channel ten viewer. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Our sincere condolences to Mrs. White and all the family. We, as former Rhode Islanders, always invited Doug White into our home each evening for the news. My husband had the pleasure of meeting him at one time when he was doing a story in Scituate. He will be missed by many.

We express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the entire family of Doug White. We are original Rhode Islanders from Lincoln and we always watched Doug from his very first day. We then moved from RI to FL in June 1999 but always watched Doug on the news when we came back to RI for our vacations. All our four children and eleven grandchildren grew up watching Doug on the news and other special volunteer fund raisers, etc. Doug, we will always remember you, the great work you did for all the people everywhere, and your quick wit. You will be missed by all our family members.

My deepest condolences to the White Family,

I was a friend of Randy's in Arlington, MA. Recently a neighbor at my summer cottage in N H told me of Doug's illness. He was a classmate of Doug's at AHS. We talked about what a wonderful guy Doug was and great family the White's are. Growing up with Randy I knew Doug as the "older" brother. Time passed and Mr White, Doug's father passed away. I made my way to an overfilled funeral service (you see, the apple DOESN'T fall far from the tree). The time that had passed since seeing Randy, let alone Doug, was over 20 years. As the family was leaving the church, Randy and Doug holding their mother's arms, Doug recognized me. He turned with his mother and brother and thanked me for coming. I later stopped and reflected, here was Doug White, who had met thousands of people, most more significant in the scheme than I, yet he took the time to say thanks to an old family friend and made me feel important to him.

But isn't that how he made us all feel. Doug will be missed and GOD will Bless him, but he will live on every time we remember him.

I would like to offer my heartfelt sympathy to Mr. White's Family.

I have a friend whose Mom (her name is Grace)loved Doug just by watching him over the years on television. One Columbus Day (a long time ago) he was in the Columbus Day Parade up on Federal Hill in Providence. Grace's young granddaughter was at the parade and she saw Doug. She took a photo of Doug. Well, she thought she'd go home and tell her grandmother that Doug said to say hello to her even though it wasn't true but just to make her feel good. Till this day she still believes it. Well, I myself, a few years back, saw Doug at St.Gregory's feast in Warwick, I told him this story and he laughed.

He asked, what's her name? He took out his business card and autographed it for her. I couldn't thank him enough because I knew how thrilled Grace was going to be.

Well, when I gave her his autograph one may think she won the lottery for the smile that it put on her face. There is not enough of money in the world to compare to the happiness he gave her. Since Doug's passing, she looks at his picture and his autograph and cries. What a great man! Please hold on to the memories and you will make it through each day. He will be missed by many. Godspeed Doug

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...

but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.

Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.

Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,

God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.

As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.

I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.

And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.

God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years

because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.

Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.

But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.

I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;

but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...

that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,

then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,

knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,

just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;

I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,

remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I attended a performance of the Ocean State Follies in June of 1992 at which time Doug's hair was the subject of a song. The performer wore on his head a cut up basketball painted black. The room was in hysterics, but no one laughed more than Doug who was in the audience and went up on stage to try on the "hair." I never forgot his good nature that evening or the way he always made the news bearable, no matter how awful it was. Doug White was the 6:00 news. Channel 10 hasn't been the same since he left.

To the White Family,

My twin sister and I, went to school, Randall Holden, with Matt. Doug and Barbara, Mr. and Mrs. White, to us, were always so kind and generous. We didn't live to far from the White's, we lived with our grandparents, off of Warwick Avenue, Doug and my grandfather would talk about baseball, my grandfather was a Yankee fan, so you can imagine the conversations, I remember cause I was the little Yankee fan, and Matthew was all Red Sox, with his Dad.

I remember "family" day at Randall Holden and we would all be playing, with our parents, and Matt made us get his dad with the water balloons!

Maybe a year or two ago, I saw Doug in the market, I would see him almost every week, but didn't want to bother him, I would hear people say, "I think that's Doug White", and I would say to them "it is"! I am now glad I went up to him to say hello, and he gave me the "smile", the same one I remembered when I was a kid.

I am very sorry for your loss, and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I first met Mr. White in 1978 when I was in the eighth grade. He made a guest appearence to the St. Kevins social studies fair. Thats just the kinda thing he would do. He was here for us, we felt like he was family. Years later he was the target to be dunked at our St. Greg's fair and he took the plunge. I know I'm going to miss him, his great smile and kindness. I can only imagine the lose for his family and friends. God bless, MI

Mrs. White, Sons, Family, and many friends. We are not Rhode Islanders by birth, but we transferred to Rhode Island from, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1980 with my husband's job. We loved this beautiful state and ocean with all of its majestic beauty. One of the first memories we have is the news with, "Doug White," and Patrice wood. As I am not much on the news due to the material and much of the time, depressing matter, I felt the need to be updated with Current Events in order to keep my four children alert to the happenings in their world. Doug White and Patrice Wood became immediate fixtures to our family. They were like family that we had never met but loved as though they were. My daugther, who is a Pharmacist at CVS, knew Doug as he went to CVS frequently. My daughter commented on what a wonderful and friendly gentleman Doug was. She informed me of his death on August 15th, which is my birthday, and our family was deeply saddened to lose such a role-model for our society and community. August 15th is a Holy Day Of Obligation, The Assumption of Mary, which I considered a honor to be born that day. I know that Jesus, and the Blessed Lady and all of the many Saints who have preceeded Doug, had heaven ready and waiting for the angel that he was. We know how much you will miss Doug, but he has touched so many of us without knowing it. What a tribute to a wonderful man.

May God bless you and your family with His great love and peace. We just thought you needed to know how many lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers go with you and your family. Thank you all for sharing this great man with so many of us.

To the White Family, To all Doug's co-workers and friends at Channel 10, and to Doug's friends all around New England, I offer my deepest sympathy and love.

I met Doug and his lovely wife Barbara on a several occasions at Bassett's restaurant a few years ago. My brother Bob formerly known as Festus was the bartender there, and the White's would be sitting at the bar having a drink while waiting for a table in the dining room. We had many funny conversations, and a few laughs with Doug's wit and jokes. I will always remember Doug as a super friendly human being and just one of the guys.

Rest in peace Mr Dough White and God Bless you and your dear family.

Wow, I still cannot believe that he is gone? I have to be honest, I was never the avid news watcher with all of the terrible things that happen on a daily basis, but can I just say, I do remember your husband or father. It had been a few years that I had worked at Citizens Bank and to be honest, it was not the greatest of jobs, but whenever he came in or even drove thru, he was the model customer and always treated me so nice, and for that I will always remember him and wish your family well.

I have many fond memories of Doug at Arlington High School and Bates College. Especially a cross-country drive we made together during summer vacation.

Sadly we lost touch recently.

But I did often watch his excellent newscasts.

My sincere condolences to Barbara and the rest of Doug's family.

His loss at such a young age is difficult to accept.

Dear Barbara & Family,

Most of us learn early in life that losing friends, family, loved ones, is part of the Almighty Master's Scheme, but each time that it happens, I realize that I've never learned to readily accept such things. So, as usual, I feel helpless and I'm lost for words, when a tragedy of this magnitude strikes. Nevertheless, please know that even more than the personal sorrow that I feel for the loss of such a good man and a friend, my heart goes out to you trying to share the burden of your grief.

My immeasurable symathy and prayers are with you, Cuz. God Bless you all.

He was the MC at my retirement, and I will never forget his sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by all. My sincere sympathy to his entire family. Walter Trahan

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

DEAR MRS. WHITE SORRY TO HEAR THE LOSS OF DOUG HE WAS A TERRFIC ANCHORMAN HE'LL BE IN OUR HEARTS AND PRAYS

My sympathy to the Whites: Your Doug was the consummate professional pioneer in transforming TV journalism from an oxymoron in the 1970s to the ethical equivalent of reputable newspaper reporting. He lent his considerable skills and inborn empathy to what became a dazzling and durable career. Yet his dignity and self-effacing humility never detracted from his boffo sense of humor. We once served as judges in a pageant for teenage girls and I had the pleasure of making sotto voce wisecracks which kept him bent over laughing. We also worked together in a enormously successful statewide campaign to train citizens in CPR; we connected again when I was accrediting officer for VIP pols visiting Rhode Island. He was and always will remain the rock upon which local broadcast news is based. Not surprisingly, he went to his Eternal Reward in the unassuming way he lived his abundant life. . .with grace. Parenthetically, we used to joke about the fact that I was a month older than he was; I insisted, when he was mocking me, that primogeniture demanded a modicum of respect. He would just laugh. And that's the way I will always remember Doug -- not deliverying the news with credibility and professional polish -- but laughing. . .and laughing. God rest his soul.

Southern New England spent many mornings and evenings with Doug. He was in our homes, speaking to our families. He will be missed by many he did not even know. Our prayers go out to his family, for the comfort that can only come from God to be in your lives today.
