Edward Dolan Obituary

DOLAN, EDWARD J. SR., beloved husband for fifty-four years of Barbara (Blanchette) Dolan of Wicklow Road, Westerly, and owner and operator for the last forty-one years of the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, Westerly, died March 25, 2008 in the Westerly Hospital.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Mary G. (Lovett) Dolan.

Mr. Dolan was a graduate of Hope High School in Providence, Class of '48', and a graduate with honors of New England Institute of Anatomy and Science in Boston where he also served as President of his class. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He moved to Westerly in 1967 and purchased the former Gaffney-Church & Allen Funeral Home at 58 Spruce St., and in 1973 he constructed a new facility across the street at its present location on 59 Spruce Street. In 1975 he was appointed by the Governor to the 1st of three terms to serve on the RI State Board of Examiners in Embalming. To this day he was the only Westerly resident to ever serve in that capacity. He was a member of the National Funeral Director's Association, The Rhode Island Funeral Director's Association and a member of the International Order of the Golden Rule. He was an avid lifelong New York Yankee fan.

In addition to his wife, he leaves on daughter Susan M. Dolan of Sanger, TX and three sons Edward J. Dolan, Jr. of Westerly; Michael S. Dolan of Stonington, CT; and Steven R. Dolan of Westerly. He also leaves three grandchildren Brittany A. Dolan of Westerly, Christopher J. Reale of Washington, D.C. and Nicholas B. Reale of Westerly, as well as two cousins. There are no calling hours. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated Saturday at 10a.m. in St. Michael the Archangel Church, 60 Liberty St, Pawcatuck, CT Burial will follow in River Bend Cemetery, 117 Beach St., Westerly, RI.

In lieu of flowers, the Dolan family requests that contributions be made to: St. Michael the Archangel Church, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379 in his memory.

The Dolan family,
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband, father and grandfather, he will surely be missed. Mr Dolan had a heart of gold and he sponsored many sport teams in the local area. One being the Westerly Women Softball team. Mr Dolan never asked the sponorship fee, just asked that the league send him a bill. The women played hard that year and won the league championship. Mr Dolan will alway be remembered for his generosity.
