GEORGE ALSFELD Obituary

ALSFELD, GEORGE W., age 52 of Abingdon, MD and formerly of Edgewood, RI passed away Sunday, January 03. He was the beloved son of the late Leonard F. and Margaret (Schneider) Alsfeld and much-loved uncle of the late Jason Green.

George was a graduate of URI with a degree in chemical engineering and later received his MBA from the University of Baltimore. In over 25 years working for WR Grace in Baltimore, George never missed a day of work until diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma.

George was very active in his community, devoting much of his time to organizing and managing Our Daily Bread, a program through St. Francis de Sales Church which provides meals to those in need. He received a citation from the Governor of MD for coaching hockey to children with Down syndrome and Autism. He also loved to run and was an avid participant in the Baltimore 5K.

Through George's battle with cancer he always exhibited a positive outlook and remained undaunted by the rigors of the disease and its treatments. He will always be remembered for his love and dedication to family and friends, a wonderful sense of humor, an infectious smile, and lifting his glass to toast 'First one today'.

George is survived by five siblings who will miss him dearly; Marylee Green Wright of Coventry, Elizabeth Gomes of Narragansett, Leonard Alsfeld of Metairie, LA, Margaret Alsfeld of Johnston and Nancy Alsfeld of Studio City, CA. His many nieces and nephews feel a great loss with the passing of their Uncle George. He also leaves behind his longtime friend Kathleen Heineman Zielinski of BelAir, MD.

Funeral Friday at 8:45 am from Jones Walton Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St. at Park Ave. Cranston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Paul Church, 1 St. Paul Place, Cranston. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston. Calling hours Thursday 5:00-8:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to St. Francis de Sales Church, 1450 Abingdon Rd., Abingdon, MD.

Thinking of you all today and sending our continued support and love to our extended family. We are changed for the better for having known George and he will remain in our hearts forever, in every family gathering, O's game and with every "first one today". To Alsfeld Family,
Sorry to hear about George's passing. The last time I saw him was in my mothers restraurant having lunch with your mother. We had a nice conversation. He was the only person I know who said he would play hockey better if he didn't practice. Always having fun in Edgewood back then with all the boys.

To George's Family: I am so deeply saddened to learn of your loss. I knew George throughout childhood and until graduation having grown up around the corner on Bluff Avenue and graduating with him at CHSE in 1975. He was a sweet and caring person who I am certain will be missed by so many. Edgewood has lost so many of its "boys" including my brother Adam Boudreau a few years ago. Please take comfort in knowing he leaves fond memories in the hearts and minds of many.

to Lenny and Peggy and the Alsfeld family,

I am so sorry to hear of George's illness and passing. I will always remember him as the little brother when we were all at CHSE. It's been many years but the memories of times at the Alsfeld home are all good ones.

"Hey Shorty, it's your birthday! You're gonna party, like bacardi! :)"

Gone but never forgotten!

Lee, Betty, Len, Peg, and Nancy, George and I would always call each other on our birthdays and start the day with this song! Had to sing it again for him and don't worry tonight will be "first one today" for sure! I'm so sorry for your loss, and am always here for you if you need me. Love Dude!

To the Alsfeld Family. I just learned of his passing. I knew George through hockey. We played together in a rec hockey league for a few years. George was just a great great guy. I always enjoyed playing hockey with him and grabing a cold one after the game. He was just always a joy to be around, very caring and funny. He will be missed.

We had the honor of knowing George through his prior wife Sheri. Sheri and Pam are sisters and my brother Paul is married to Pam. George was an uncle to my kids as well as both my brother's kids. He was at every social gathering. He was witty and smart and well liked by our whole family. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, he is in a better place, of course and is feeling total peace. God Bless you all and I will be praying for you all as the days and weeks go on. Janet Frock Semerad

Dear Family of George, Although I am not an Edgewood Kid, I am adding a comment to show how diverse and open minded George was, to befriend a kid from Forest Hills! Imagine! George did me the great favor of taking me to not one but two proms, sparing me the humiliation of promlessness. George is the exact guy my father would have wanted me to marry and come to find out, my father was right! George was a prince, by any measure. I hope you receive solace over your loss, from all the outpouring of love to our dear old friend. I treasure the few exchanges we had in recent years when I learned of his illness. He managed to squeak out a Christmas card this year, how classy is that? Much love, Joan Cahill Cranston East class of '76.

George and I became friends about 28 years ago when we lived in Glen Burnie and maintained that friendship over all these years, even after I relocated back to the west coast. We were able to visit a time or two each year, and always picked up right where we left off, without skipping a beat, whether we were plotting out pursuing an MBA, sharing our excitement about getting married, or having a pint and commiserating over a divorce. George was all about connecting with people and actively caring for individuals, and that was demonstrated in so many ways through his activities and how he lived his life. I look forward to when my old friend and I meet again.

To Kathleen and the Alsfeld Family, when we went to visit George to present him with his Toastmasters Award, I told him that seeing all the people he has touched has redefined my definition of success in life. I suggested that he might want to write a speech for the rest of us on how to live such a life of Grace, Humor and Caring. He didn't get to write that speech, but I don't think he needed to. He lived his life incredibly well and his actions spoke decibels above any words. Thanks George!

The Alsfeld Family,

I have spoken to some of you over the phone. I'm so sorry for your loss. I was not able to attend any services, but I want you to know that you and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.

I worked with George at Grace. He was a great guy. Anytime I needed a good laugh -- I'd call him and sure enough in no time he had me laughing.

May your memories of George bring you comfort during this difficult time.

To the Alsfeld family-
I remember George from the Student Entertainment Committee, where I served on the Executive Committee as Member-at-Large. George was one of the most easygoing members in an organization where strong egos ans opinions often prevailed.
George also ushered at my URI graduation, in 1978.
My heartfelt condolences on his untimely passing.

Brother Len and Sisters MaryLee, Betty, Peggy and Nancy: Fond memories fill my mind from 20 Swift Street. Poor George loved it when we stopped by but unfortunately had to give up his bed upstairs to "One" of Lenny's college friends when we stayed overnight (as per Spunky and Champ's instruction). He didn't care, as a high schooler he loved hanging out with Lenny's older friends. He was the "cool" kid brother. He's still the Cool kid brother. See ya Georgie!

I had the privilege of knowing George, visiting him each time I traveled to Maryland, seeking his philanthropic support, and conversing with him about mutual interests, experiences, and life in general. I'd stop at Grace to pick him up, and we'd usually have a pleasant lunch together. We exchanged insights, enjoyed each other's company, and became friends. I shall miss him personally, and I also extend condolences on behalf of College of Engineering friends and faculty.

I was so sad to hear of George's passing. It's been a long time since I last saw George but he has that long-lasting affect on people. I knew George at the University of Rhode Island. We were both serving on the Student Entertainment Committee. George was our leader. I remember George as being one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He had to have a "special" personality in order to deal with all us hot-heads. He was always calm and listened to all sides and he made us a GREAT team under his leadership.

My thoughts and prayers are with George and his friends and family.

Dear Lenny, Peggie, Nancy, Marylee,

I was overcome with sadness and sympathy when Lenny told us Georgie had died. As you know, we all loved him so very much....my Dad especially. Georgie played for my Dad in the Minors in the Edgewood Little League and my brother Billy and I played with Lenny on Carter's Reality. I can still see Georgie running around Beachmont and Fay fields and how he listened so closely to my Dad when he spoke. My Dad loved Georgie and told me it was a pleasure to coach George...quote: "Georgie was one of my best and nicest kids in 20 plus years of coaching. I was very lucky to coach George." I remember vividly the last time I saw Georgie after Mass at St. Paul's in Edgewood. His smile and gentle manner and caring and giving heart were always evident. He truly blest me and my family. We all love George and we shall never forget him. May his soul rest in eternal peace and united with all our loved ones in Heaven.

God bless George!

His Grace & Strength!
