James Coppola Obituary

COPPOLA, JAMES C., age 61, of Lantern Lane, Warwick, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 23, 2011. He was the husband of Mona R. (Salisbury) Coppola for 21 years. Born in Providence, a son of James and Doreen C. (Knowles) Coppola of North Smithfield, he lived in Warwick for most of his life. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, and earned his MBA at Bryant University. He had served with the RI Air National Guard. Jimmy was employed as a Senior Vice President of BETA Group, Inc. in Lincoln. He worked at the firm for more than 23 years. Prior to that, he was employed by the City of Warwick in the Planning Department. During his career, Jim was very active in the American Public Works Association (APWA). He rose to the position of President of the New England Chapter of APWA in 2007. The culmination of his dedication to the Chapter was being selected to receive the Harry S. Swearingen Award in 2010. The award recognized one member nationally for their achievement and excellence in Chapter service. An avid sailor, he was a captain, and author of several published articles on sailing. Besides his wife and parents, he leaves a sister, Sidra A. Nikolyszyn and her husband Oleg of North Smithfield; a brother, David M. Coppola and his wife Donna of Coral Springs, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, September 27, from 4-7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick. If desired, contributions in his memory may be made to Crossroads RI, 160 Broad Street, Providence, RI 02903, or Rhode Island Family Shelter, 165 Beach Avenue, Warwick, RI 02889.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Coppola, David, Sidra, Oleg, and of course, Mona. Please accept my sincerest condolences for Jim's passing. I remember Jim quite well from my younger years, and also vividly remember that Jim loved to listen to his brother, David, sing and play the piano. Jim was a benevolent, sincere, caring, happy, and intelligent human being. I am so sorry that he passed at such a young age. He will be remembered always.

Written for you, Jim:

So many changes...
So many faces set aside...
so much good gets left behind...
lost in the wake, of once-upon-a time.

And they come to us in dreams
every now and then... those faces
and though we know better...
we hesitate, until when becomes the end.
and it's too late...

Yet, though your not here, Jim
I can still see your smile
I can still hear your laugh
I can still feel your soul
both in present and the past

The memory's so clear, Jim
I can still see your smile
I can still hear your laugh
I can still feel your heart
shining warmth forever last

... and your touch will always last
... yes your touch will always last
long beyond the time the sun, will shine its final ray of light...
your touch will turn to rainbow...
and guide you threw the night.

To the Coppola Family:
Condolences on your loss. I knew Jimmy both as a true professional that provided outstanding services to my Town, and the effervescent personality that could light up a room. At every APWA event that I attended, Jim was always someone that I looked forward to seeing and spending some time with. He would always give me a good tip on places along the RI shore, and then with a wink mention that it was unspoiled with tourists from Connecticut.
Take care mate, you will be missed.

Dear Coppola Family, I was very saddened when I learned that Jim had passed away. I met Jim about 15 years ago at a Mass Highway Association meeting, and we kidded each other about maybe being distant cousins. We've maintained that by calling each other "cus" when ever there was a meeting and we would both be there. I,and many of his colleague's in the association will miss his presence.
