Melkon Varadian Obituary

VARADIAN, MELKON KHACHIG, "MAL", 88, passed away suddenly on his way home from Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church on Sunday morning, August 5, 2012. He was born in Providence, RI, the son of the late Sarkis and Ramela Varadian from Palou, Armenia. He was the husband of 61 years to the late Isabelle "Zabel" Shiranian Varadian. He is predeceased by his three brothers Varad, Haig and John "Jay" Varadian. He is survived by his cherished family members: his sister Maro Varadian Kachadoorian; his three children, Michael and his wife Armenie, Sandra Megerdichian and her husband Megerdich, and Malcolm and his wife Kristen; his seven grandchildren, Nick, Siran and her husband Keith, Armen and his wife Nicole, Sarah, Antranig and his wife Melineh, Melkon, and Ani; and his four great grandchildren, Emily, Nicholas, Carl and Rosabelle. After serving in the Army in World War II in Europe, Mal and Zabel operated Public Street Market in South Providence, a community they served for over forty years until their retirement, where many of the city's community, ethnic and political leaders gathered for sound advice and reminders of their roots. The Armenian community was an important aspect of Mal's life. Upon his return from the war, he participated in the construction of Camp Haiastan, an Armenian youth camp in Franklin, MA. Mal also served as a Board of Trustees member and National Representative Assembly delegate of the Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church in Providence, RI. Mal was an Olympic King and National Honorary Member of the Armenian Youth Federation of America, a founder of its national Junior organization, and a member and leader of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and Armenian National Committee of America. He was also a founding member of the Armenian Martyrs' Memorial Monument Committee, whose monument to the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide stands at the entrance to the North Burial Grounds in Providence. In his retirement, Mal continued to serve family, friends and Church with his beloved group in the kitchen at Sts. Vartanantz Church. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 9th at 11:00 AM at Sts. To the Varadian Family:
Our deepest sympathy on the loss of Mel. He was a kind, caring, gentle fellow with a heart filled with gold.
We knew Mel from the old South Side Market he and his lovely wife had. It is where my mom and people would go not to just buy good meats but to have good conversation with Mel. He treated everyone well and was respected by all. My family loved him.
My brother Rick would stop in to see him every week and they would share stories of his latest basketball game at Central High and later Providence College. Some time ago, while at Tony's Market, Varkis called Mel on the phone so my brother Rick who was visiting from Bermuda could talk to him. They both were so elated.
At times, I still pass by that ole store on my way to teach at CCRI and I always think of Mel with such fond memories.
The neighborhood has changed, the people moved or passed on but the memories linger.
RIP Mel and may God bless all of you for having wonderful parents.

Malcolm,
My condolences for the lost of your father. I read his obituary and some of the messages on the guest book and understand where you inherited your helpful trait. It has been seven years since I retired but I will always remember your kind assistance to everyone.

Dear Varadian Family. My Sister Donna DePalma expressed herself as she spoke from her heart, her condolences to your Dad Mal and that we felt more like his children than a friend. That's how Uncle Mal made you feel. At this time of sorrow we are assured that you keep his spirit alive and visit as he did the Memorial at North Burial Ground, the Armenian Genocide Monument. Mal took much pride each April planting the geraniums there. Rest in peace Uncle Mal.

My heart goes out to the Varadian family. I was so saddened to hear that this remarkable, humble and caring man has passed on. I was so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to know him. When it came to the AYF Olympics, he was everyone' father. Here was this caring and compasinate man who taught me many lessons not only on the track but in life. For me, he was a second father as I felt his warmth and closeness. What will always stand out in my mind was the race I had ran on a warm summer olympics day as I was finishing my race, my friend Mal had a wet towel which he wiped on my face to cool me down. Your legacy will live on and on. Rest well and God bless this extraordinary man whom we all came to love.

Our sincere sympathy to the entire Varadian family and its extended family of the proud Providence Armenian community.
Mal will always be revered as a true Nationalist, devoting many, many years of engagement and quiet leadership to the cause of his community and its varied activities.
Not much for visibility but substantial in deed, Mal was a true role model to follow.
This quiet man is an enduring hero and inspiration for young and old alike.
It is appropriate at this time to also reflect, and appreciate, the roles Mal and his brothers assumed in Providence.
The Varadian family has no peer.

Sincerely,
Harry & Margo Derderian,Farmington Hills, Mich.

Uncle Mal, your smile will always consume me. I will miss you dearly. May you rest in peace. Both my Sister Donna and myself will keep you in our thoughts as we distinctly remember you handing Donna a wet towel in the Olympics after she finished the 800 meter run. It pleased me that God saw the goodness in you and that each day was a blessing right up until your passing. With Love dear Mal ..Linda

My condolences on Mels passing. He was a very nice man. I only met him recently while I was doing work on the Memorial at N. Burial Grounds. I was working there on Monday and for some strange reason I was thinking about him all day expecting him to show up. He loved that monument. God Bless him.

Dear Varadian Family,
I am so sad for all of you because I know what sorrow you must be feeling on the loss of your patriarch, Mr. Varadian. I've known him since I was a young girl in the AYF and in all those years his character never waivered...always kind, always gentle, always pleasant...a true gentleman and a pillar of the community. Mr. Varadian will be missed by all who knew him. His passing has left a deep emptiness in all our hearts. Perhaps we can say that, in a way, our loss is Heaven's gain. Asdvadz hokeen loosavoreh.
