Michael Canning Obituary

Canning, Michael E.
Michael E. Canning, of Oak Park, Illinois passed away on December 29, 2020 at the age of 63 after a two-year battle with cancer. Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island to Edward and Catherine (Morris) Canning, he was the beloved husband of 30 years to his wife Sally and father of his daughter Madeline.
Mike was a life-long learner, earning a B.A., Humanities from Providence College in 1979, a B.S., Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 1985, a M.S., Civil Engineering from Penn State University in 1989, and a M.A., International Studies/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Wheaton College in 2012. He graduated from Cumberland High School in 1975.
Mike taught Business English to international business students and provided customized Business English language coaching for more than 100 international executives and managers across a wide range of industries. Mike adored his students and never stopped thinking about how to build their skills and confidence in English and intercultural communication. He combined his expertise in teaching with the experience he gained from more than two decades as a civil engineering manager, specializing in water and wastewater hydraulic modeling, master planning and optimization. He stayed involved in the profession, and enjoyed the comradery of his workmates, on the team of the Australian water optimization firm WCS Engineering.
Mike walked forward in death as he had in life, following the Good Shepherd he loved and trusted. He served in many capacities in the church over the years, including as head elder, teacher and cast member in many a humorous and meaningful skit. Mike was a genuinely humble, kind, gentle and caring soul whose listening and presence made others the focus, leaving them feeling heard and accepted. A djembe player, music was essential to Mike's life, and his yearly "best of" song compilations were highly anticipated (and debated) by friends and family. An avid outdoorsman, Mike enjoyed hiking, kayaking and traveling with loved ones. A lifelong baseball fan, Mike took great joy in organizing an annual baseball trip with his siblings to a Red Sox away game, with a goal of visiting all MLB ballparks in America. These trips included a required visit to an Irish Pub and a live music venue – a tradition that his siblings look forward to continuing in his honor. Mike is also survived by his four siblings, Patrick and his wife Betsy of Chicago, IL, Christopher and his wife Michelle of Warwick, RI, Kathleen Mello and her husband Vincent of Wilmington, NC and Stephen and his wife Kristen, of New Market, MD. He was the proud and loving uncle to 12 nieces and nephews, including Caroline, Abbey, Corinne, Audrey, Douglas, Sean, Mallory, Benjamin, Molly and Tess Canning, and Megan and Luke Mello.
Mike donated his body to science with the hope that he could help others by advancing the study and treatment of serious disease. Funeral services will be private, with a memorial service planned for later in 2021 to celebrate Mike's life.

Hi Sally and the family
Today i learned of passing of Mike and though it has been years since we lost touch , but it hurt me to the heart as i always thought one day we will chat about the past and he would listen carefully and devote his full attention to your story as he always did for others and gave you his affirmative expressions of support while listening and at times threw a joke to calm you down or went along with your case in a story just so you feel better. Mike and I were colleagues in an engineering consulting firm in Limerick Pa and my wife and I attended his wedding celebration with Sally and a few months later Mike and Sally did the same for us. I can say that he was one of the finest and most caring people i have ever met in my life and his kind and gentle impression has never left me. My deepest sympathy with sally and Mike´s daughter who were graced to share a life with an extraordinary human .

Mike Canning was one of those special friendships and people I will never forget. We were students together at the University of Rhode Island, and we fellowshipped together with a group called the Navigators. Mike was a kind, gentle, warm and loving soul. I don’t think I ever knew him to be angry. While I am devastated to hear the news that he has left us, physically, I am comforted by the fact that he is with the Risen Lord. At the end of the day that’s the most important thing although I know it is still hard for his family and friends . While we will never “deserve” to be in heaven, Mike had complete assurance that he would be there with his Savior Jesus Christ.

I am so blessed and grateful to be watching the memorial. My wife, Judith, and I met Mike in 1980 in Providence. Was he a student then at Providence College? We met him as waiter at the East Side Rusty Scupper. Mike was a partner in our ministry in Providence. We all moved to West Kingston to attend the University of Rhode Island and to participate in the Navigator ministry there. We connected later in a visit to Penn State. What I remember about Mike then were the courageous and radical decisions to attend more fully to the Lord’s mission and that mission in his life. I wasn’t enough of a baseball player to appreciate his skill, knowledge, and love of the game. He shed his confidence and gentleness over our entire community. In this memorial I am learning how much greater a man of God Mike grew into. Thanks be to God for Mike, the Lord’s servant! Thanks be to God for the glorifying testimony of Sally and Madeline Canning and for all who contributed to this memorial service.

I'm grieving and fondly remembering my friend and professional colleague, Mike Canning. Mike was an accomplished civil engineer for 25 years who made a mid-career decision to pursue a master's degree in and become a teacher. I was his professor in several classes in the MA TESOL & Intercultural Studies program at Wheaton, but we had more of a peer relationship. He taught in the business/professional training program at ELS Chicago (Dominican University), working with international scientists and business professionals. He was a vibrant, gifted teacher who loved his diverse students. We co-presented our research at conferences in Hong Kong, Toronto, and several state conventions, and recently we were busy preparing two presentations for the International TESOL Convention in March. Beyond our professional relationship, I thoroughly enjoyed traveling and spending time with Mike. He was intellectually curious, good-humored, devoted to his family, and a man of deep faith. His wonderful wife, Sally, is one of my colleagues in the Wheaton College Graduate School. Please remember his family in your prayers as they grieve.

I taught briefly with Michael at ELS and remember him as a joyful, thought and skilled teacher. He brought enthusiasm to the classroom, and I’m glad I got to work with him. May your hearts be lightened by memories of his love.
In sympathy,

Dear Sally:
I was just informed of your dear husband's passing and wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. I know he was a great man b/c he married a great woman. I remember you purchasing a kayak years ago from REI for Michael as he loved this sporting activity. I know God will strengthen you during this difficult time.
