If this is the Robert Nelson who graduated from RIC in 1967, I knew him as a kind and decent young man.
I'm happy to see he had a full and love-filled life.

Kathy & Heather, 30 years ago (Dec.1981)Bob was responsible for me becoming a U.S. citizen. Bob was one of my sponsors. I remember the day, Bob having prepaid lunch, the swearing in, and the wine gift basket he took out of your car at day's end. Typical Bob Nelson class!
At Amica, he was a fun loving free spirit, always talking highly of his "princesses". The world would be a better place with more like him.
Ginny & I convey our sincere condolences and to borrow an old Irish proverb, "he was in heaven, long before the devil knew he was dead".
Peace,
Rosemary Snyder

Kathy and Heather, my deepest sympathies on your loss. I have worked for Amica for many years and worked with Bob for many of them before his retirement. He was a wonderful guy who could always make us laugh. His many stories over the years were always entertaining. Nothing compared to when he talked about the two of you. He loved his family more than anything and spoke so proudly of you. When I saw him at Amica's annual dinner I asked him 'How's the family?' and he proudly said 'well let me show you', and took out pictures of you all and his grandson and he had that same smile on his face that he had years ago when he would proudly show us baby pictures of Heather. He will be missed by many but I am sure he will forever look down and have that same proud smile as he watches over you.

Dear Kathy and Heather:
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your husband and father. I worked with Bob for many years and enjoyed every one of them. His love for the two of you was evident in his daily stories he would share with us. I recently saw Bob at Joan Mc Dermott's retirement party and again heard some more loving stories of his family, which now included a son-in-law and grandson.
May your loving memories of this very kind soul sustain you through the days ahead. You will be in my prayers.
God Bless!

Dear Mrs. Nelson,Heather,and Chris,
I unfortunately did not get to meet such a well loved man as Robert, but in reading some of these condolences I see that he has made a lasting impression in this world and left behind some great things to show for his time here, including his beautiful daughter and grandson, whom I hope to know for years to come. I hope that the support you receive at this time will get you through and see you back to your normal routine of life. I also hope that a lifetime of memories will comfort you well into the future. You have our deepest sympathies. Semper Fidelis Mr. Nelson. Peace be with your family.
Sincerely,

In 40 years there has been only one customer who ever had a menu item named after them at the Pot au Feu - that person is of course Robert Nelson. The “Poulet Robert” his favorite dish was named in his honor. Bob would simply walk in, place a $10 bill on the bar and soon thereafter Charlie, our bartender, delivered his lunch to him. No need to scan the menu, no need to hear the specials, no need to even take the order – Bob knew what he was having and so did we.
Some customers are known to our servers but only Bob is known to the owners, chef, every cook, all the bartenders, every server, many of the other customers and even the dishwashers - that was Bob Nelson.
He was a great friend often taking time to clip and mail stories about the restaurant business, wine or some new food trend that he had seen. Frequently, he would call just because an idea had popped into his head that he wanted to share.
Everyone delighted in following along as Bob chronicled the decades as Heather made her way through school and college and then on to marriage and motherhood bringing him such pride and joy with the birth of his grandson, Chase.
Kathy, we could search the world and still it would be hard to find any man who spoke so lovingly of his wife.
We loved his salty stories of Vietnam, his indignation with the course of current events and his great sense of humor. He always had a refreshing take on all.
Bob was always eager to help out anyone he could – he would quietly pick up the tab for servicemen at lunch and once was so incensed by the bad behavior of a criminal in court he anonymously bought lunch for the Judge who had endured the indignity.
When the Independence Trail was starting he volunteered to go around to take photographs of many of the historic sites along the trail. He captured their beauty and majesty and for months delivered one CD after another of incredible images of our heritage.
Bob Nelson was a gentle man and a gentleman. From the jungles of Vietnam, to the offices of Amica, to "his" seat at the Pot au Feu - he charmed all who got to know him.
Bob embodied the motto “Semper Fidelis” – his dedication commitment, loyalty and honor are unparalleled – to family, nation, work, faith and friends he spread joy in a million quiet and often anonymous acts of unselfish kindness and thoughtfulness.
He answered every call to duty that ever came in his direction and now that he has answered this final call we can rest assured that as perfect as heaven might have been up to now– things are going to be getting just a little more “ship shape”.
Best of luck, Lord! Bob Nelson has reported for duty!
Adieu mon ami, adieu nos ami.

To the family of Bob, what a good person, nice and a lot of fun, when he was here at Amica. My god bless you and hold Bob in your hearts, and know that he will be with you forever. He will live in you, so his grandchild will know what a great guy he was. Look to god and he will help with the pain in your hearts.
