Steven Brin Obituary

BRIN, DR. STEVEN CHARLES Passed away on Sunday, November 2nd. Steven is survived by his wife, Dr. Rita Nenonen, his two children Sara and Elizabeth, his grandson Calvin Rex Jedreski as well as his two brothers, Drs. Kenneth and Mitchell Brin and his mother Phyllis Brin. Steven was born in Boston, and attended college at the New York University. While in New York, he worked as a line cook and a taxi driver. He completed a Master's degree in genetics at George Washington University and then completed his medical degree at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. After completing an Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence, he worked at the Providence Community Health Center and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. In 1997, he began practicing Internal Medicine at Coastal Medical in Providence where he has worked for the past 17 years, attended to patients at Rhode Island Hospital, and provided care at Morgan Health Nursing Home. Steve expressed his dedication to the community volunteering at the Rhode Island Free Clinic. He served on the Board of Coastal Medical and multiple medical committees. He enjoyed spending time with his three girls and his new grandson. His love for his work with patients and the medical community in Rhode Island was rivaled only by his love for his wife and daughters. Steven was a sailor, and looked forward to taking family and friends out on his 25 year-old Bristol 35.5 that he nurtured and cared for like a member of the family. He had a passion for music and while in High School, appeared on the Ted Mac Amateur Hour playing his 12 string guitar. Steven has shuffled off this mortal coil, sailed away, and will be missed fiercely by his family, friends and patients. There will be a memorial reception for Dr. Steven Brin at the Monahan, Drabble & Sherman Funeral Home at 230 Waterman Street, Providence on Friday evening from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that gifts or donations be made to the Rhode Island Free Clinic at 655 Broad Street, Providence, Rhode Island, 02906 or through their website at www.rifreeclinic.org.

I just read that Steve passed. He was my husband's physician before we moved to CT 7 yrs ago. My daughter is sick and now lives in RI.I went on line to find Steve's tel # to give to her and found his obit.I am shocked. He was one of the finest, competent and caring physicians that we have ever known. What a loss to the medical profession and mankind! A very belated sympathy.(As an FYI, my husband also passed in 2015.)

December 4, 2015

I only recently learned of Dr Brin's passing from a friend. I was both shocked and stunned. I had my last visit with the "Doc" in March of 2014. It was an emotional last visit as I was moving out of state the following month. I told him he was not only my doctor for many years but also a good friend. Since I had through the years visited Ireland almost on a yearly basis, his love of tradional Irish music was so apparent. Sometimes I would surprise him with a CD of "real" Irish music, as he referred to it often. His appreciative look was enough to convince me of his genuine gratefulness for thinking of him. I would often ask him when he was going to visit Ireland and his answer was always the same: "someday."
To his family I extend my deepest sympathy to you all. I will miss him dearly, you will miss him dearly, his friends and his patients will miss him dearly. Life has lost a great human being, and an even better physician.

November 18, 2014

I am deeply, emotionally saddened by the news of Dr. Brin's passing. As a lawyer, I am not one to disclose my personal feelings indiscriminately. But his caring, empathetic, and genuinely concerned demeanor, and his incisive, analytical ability, made him one to whom I could honestly confide for 20 years. And he shepherded me through times when I dearly needed that help. He treated everyone with humble respect, but wasn't reticent to read the "riot act", but in a caring, purposive, way.
He was so proud of his children, and his daughter's wonderful prose on sailing was prominently and, of course, proudly displayed in the room where I was often seen. And that prose followed him from the old office in Cranston years ago to the "new" office in Providence.
He once proudly mentioned how energized he was to see his children overseas, and encouraged me to do the same when my children were far away, which I then did. It wasn't about him, he emphasized how good they would feel to have their parent come so far to see them doing well: "They will simply appreciate that you were there and cared."
So that's why I pass this on to you, and hope you feel good about that.
He was a genius, and medically, always on the forefront of what medication meant or was effective for, as I incessantly cross-examined him on what they meant!
So rare to have such an intellect to be paired with a giant heart in a position to guide the rest of us mortals. He was a gem, and I will miss him. He was a rare human being, and your family is rightly proud to call him your own. I am proud that I knew him. My best wishes, and peace to you all.

Dr. Brin truly eaved my sister-in-law's life. Neglected by her previous physician, she sadly told Dr. Brin during her first visit, "I am dying, doctor."
"NO," he replied, I won't let you!"
That evening he called her home just to see how she was doing, and we, her family, were present to hear the call. We immediately dubbed him "Dr. Marcus Welby, M.D." She believed in him and lived another 10 years! Several of those family members left their own doctors and became his patients out of sheer gratitude! I can just imagine how warmly she greeted her beloved Dr. Brin on the threshold of Eternity!

Thoughts and prayers to Rita, Sara and EJ. I had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Brin as a Gordon parent, as a doctor at RIGHA/Harvard Health, and then on a professional level for the seven years that I worked at Morgan Health Center. He was the Medical Director there. I actually spoke with him a week prior to hearing about his passing. As you can see Dr. Brin has impacted many people. He will truly be missed.

November 14, 2014

To Dr. Brin's family and all who loved him, I was deeply saddened to learn today of Steven's death. He has been a compassionate and caring physician to me, and I have long thought of him as a friend. I still have his Merc 2.5 hp. We shared sailing adventures, and horror stories about old boats and the injuries that they cause middle aged men. He has helped me heal many times, and has helped me right my ship on several occasions too. I will will miss him. He made my life better, as my doctor and as a caring soul who took the time to see me as a person, not just a patient. I have leaned on him and trusted him to be there when I have needed help. He made me laugh. We made each other laugh. I was looking forward to someday crossing paths on the water... at Cuttyhunk or Edgartown. I hope that the knowledge that Steven has helped and been loved by so many can bring some small measure of comfort in this time of such terrible grief. He was a good man. He made me feel that this world is a little brighter, more thoughtful, kinder, and more wondrous and joyous place than it so often seems. To Steven and crew, fair winds and following seas. b

November 14, 2014

This is the saddest possible news. Dr. Brin has been our PCD since we moved from Japan 18 years ago. We were probably some of his first patients when he made the move from the hospital to the clinic. Myself, my wife, then my sons all counted on him to not only care about our physical problems, but also to take a moment to listen to our personal problems, and to show that rare moment of caring, offering advice as he saw fit. We feel that we have not lost a doctor, but a wise elder brother. We will all miss you terribly, Dr. Brin.

I just received a letter in the mail from Coastal Medical informing my husband and I of Dr. Brin's death. My husband and I are shocked and saddened. He is an amazing, compassionate physician. We transferred to him because we weren't happy with our previous physician. I am 47 and my husband is 49 and we have been under his care for about 10years now. We love him and think he is and awesome physician. The three of us were growing older together we could all see it and would comment on it. He was always on top of everything regarding our health. My husband put a little weight on and Dr. Brin has been trying to get him to lose it and just last month Dr. Brin challenged my husband to loose 10 lbs before his next visit in February and I have to say this challenge has been effective my husband is truly working on it and often comments how he needs to lose the weight before he sees Dr. Brin again. Dr. Brin truly new how to connect to his patients and get them to do the things they didn't want to. I am very sorry Dr. Brin's family, I can't even think of trying to pick another MD for my husband and I. He truly was the doctor for us. I can't even imagine how difficult this is for you. My prayers are with you all. Tracy and Ron Bardsley

As did Martha Cussler, I learned yesterday of Steve Brin's death. Shocked and sad. I was part of the committee that interviewed and hired him at RIGHA, Harvard Community HP. Tears well in my eyes as I write this message. My heart is breaking for his wife and daughters who he spoke of often during visits and I feel I know. Steven had the gift of making his patients feel like they were personal friends which comes across as I read everyone's touching words. Yes,I to felt special when I came to see him. He was more than a doctor, I felt he was my friend. We discussed books, our kids and what was happening in our lives. Steven was our doctor from RIGHA through Harvard Health and finally at Coastal. He was our doctor more than 20 years My husband and I would follow him anywhere. Glad we did because Steven saved my husband's life twice with his astute doctoring. Steven was not only a doctor extraordinaire but he was more than that to me...He was a friend. I will miss him so.

We are lost for words. Love and respect goes out to Dr. Brin's family, friends, and the staff at Coastal Medical.
Dr. Brin has been my Doctor for over 20 years and I feel like I have lost a family member. He was my Mother's Dr. for many years and helped our family deal with her cancer, radiation and kemo. We managed to extend her life and it's quality an additional 6 years with his expertise and guidance. I will never forget the day we were leaving Coastal and Doc. was walking beside my Mom's wheel chair as we left her appointment. She reached over and pinched his butt. He laughed and hugged her with his face as red as a beet. She passed away three weeks later and for the past 14 years he and I would always laugh about that day. My Mom gave him a tie as a gift and it was funny that it seemed when I had an appointment around the winter holidays he would wear that tie. He was also my husband's Dr., My Mother in Law's Dr. and our niece's Dr. We use to call him our Family Dr. I was in his office two weeks ago and we discussed my up coming heart surgery. The last thing he said to me was, Don't worry Judith, I'll be there all the way with you and Dr. Mazza, and the surgeon. Well Doc. Brin, I will miss you more then anyone will ever know. The Love and Respect will remail always. God Bless you Dr. Brin. Rest in peace.

My husband and I have been patients for 13 years. We are both so saddened by this loss, and considered Dr. Brin a friend. In fact, we always said we'd love to have him over for dinner some time. He and I swapped book recommendations often, and my husband loved to talk with him about music. Medically, he was so helpful to me. I can remember being on vacation in LA & feeling ill. He dropped everything to talk on the phone to me when I called. During one of my first visits to him, shortly after 9/11, I remember he asked me if it would be ok if he took a phone call during my visit from one of his daughters who was living in NYC. He was just an amazingly kind human being. I am in shock. My heartfelt condolences to his family. You are in my thoughts.

I am sincerely sorry for the loss of such a great man. He was a wonderful physician who went above and beyond the call of duty. He always made me feel special every time that I was in his company. There are no words that will bring comfort at this time, but know that he was loved and respected. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Dr. Steve was more than just my doctor. We shared a love of the water and he sought my advice on paddles for his kayak. I gave him a special kayak paddle last Christmas in his office. His joy at receiving it was no less than my joy in giving it. He was my doctor and friend. I share deeply in his family's grief and loss of this wonderful human being

Dear Sara and Rita, we remember his grace, good humor and wit. He was an amazing person and an inspiration to us. I remember Rita and Steve's pizza dinner in Northampton, MA when visiting Aislinn at Smith. They were so kind to help us feel included in that new world. Thanks ever for the kindness.

We are devastated by the death of Dr. Brin, a loyal and dedicated volunteer at the Rhode Island Free Clinic. Steve always had a smile on his face and provided quality and compassionate care to those in need. I know it will be difficult for the staff and his physician colleagues, who worked side by side with him on Thursday evening, to not have him with us. Steve's heart was so big. We send thoughts of gratitude, peace and courage to his loving family. May you all be comforted by the outpouring of support that surrounds you.

I like so many others were shocked and saddened to read about De Brins passing. He was my PCP for the past six years after my previous doctor retired. His compassion wit and understanding along with his so many outstanding qualities will be missed. I always felt comfortable with Dr Brins help and guidance. Deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Please accept our deepest condolences. My husband and I were both patients of Dr. Brin. He was played a pinnacle role in saving my husband's life four years ago. I always enjoyed our little chats during my appointments with Dr. Brin. He was always cheerful and kind. He will be greatly missed and has a very special place in our hearts.

Dr. Brin has been our family Dr. for over 15 years for myself my wife and my daughter. the term family dr. was defined in the 50's and 60's and for years everyone thought they didn't exist. I can tell you that Dr. Brin defined the word family Dr. for our family and I am sure others. The loss can never be measured and our heartfelt condolences goes out to his family and the Costal medical staff. I always read his daughter's letter on the wall which she wrote while on their boat. My family and I will never find another Dr. as giving as you.

Words cannot express how sad we feel today about losing Dr. Brin. He cared for all of our family in such brilliant and compassionate ways for what feels like a lifetime. He felt like family to us and we will miss him terribly. Our deepest sympathies go out to family, friends, and all who adored him as much as we did.
