BINGHAMTON — Mildred M. (Hrifko) Wasko, 89, of Binghamton, N.Y., fell asleep with the angels on Saturday, December 17, 2016.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael Sr. and Mary (Bertha) Hrifko; husband, Andrew Wasko Sr.; mother-in-law, Julia (Baba) Wasko; brothers, Michael Jr., Eugene, and John; and nephew, Michael Hrifko; in-laws, Rose Hrifko, Joe and Julia Duzen, and John and Regina Wozniak.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Andrew and Julie Wasko, Robert and Linda Wasko, Marybeth and Patrick Walsh, Annheleen Smith; 10 grandchildren, who she loved and praised to high heaven, Andrew IV, Joseph, Emilianna Wasko, Melissa, Matthew, Steven (Ericka) Wasko, Patrick and Maclane Walsh, Meredith and Elizabeth; great-grandson, Christopher; sister, Maryann (Bob) Oakley; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hrifko, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Millie was born in Jessup, and lived in Dupont, Johnson City, N.Y., and Binghamton. She worked in the garment industry and was a seamstress for Barbizon. She worked in retail for Tri Phi Shops, Fowlers and Bon-Ton. She was a big Yankee fan and loved any sport her family was involved in. She never turned down a night at the casino and was a bingo extraordinaire. Millie was very involved with St. John the Baptist Church in Pittston, with the Holy Rosary Society and was very active in Catholic School Education, PTA and Riverside Towers Bible Study. She was a volunteer at St. James Church, Johnson City, N.Y. Her Slovak cooking was next to none. Her halupki, pierogi and kolachi did not make it through the day!
The family wishes to thank the loving caregivers, her dear friends at Riverside Towers, Lourdes Hospice and Mercy House.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Thursday, Dec. 22, in St. James Church, 131 Main St., Johnson City, N.Y., with burial in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Exeter, in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mildred's name can be made to Lourdes Hospice, Mercy House or Parkinson's Association of Binghamton.

Marybeth and Annheleen and Family: I was so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I have such fond memories of both your Mom and Dad. I only wish I saw this sooner so I could have attended the mass. I live back in JC again taking care of my Dad. Your Mom was so much fun and I am sure she will be truly missed.

Nature
As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.
