Donn Lum Obituary

Donn P. Lum Donn P. Lum, 75, of Chambersburg, passed away Friday, July 11, after a courageous battle with cancer. He had been a resident of the Shook home for the past month. He was born March 30, 1939, in Rochester, NY, the son of the late Howard M. Lum, Jr. and Josephine Kramer Lum. Donn was a 1957 graduate of Chambersburg High School and a 1961 graduate of Mount Saint Mary's College. He pursued graduate work at Fairleigh Dickinson College in NJ and various technical courses relative to his fields of work. Beginning his career as a food technologist, Donn achieved membership in the Institute of Food Technology while working locally for Pet Milk. He then worked in technical sales for Beatrice Foods in Chicago and NY, Lucta, SA of Barcelona, Spain, and the Stange Corporation of Patterson, NJ. Returning to Chambersburg in 1969, Donn and his wife, Sue, owned and operated the Copper Kettle Restaurant through 1980 as well as the West End Tavern for a lesser time. Donn was also regional sales manager for Edward Don Compnay overseeing the sales of commercial restaurant equipment and supplies. Donn and Sue were realtors with Lutman Realty and Century 21 until buying the Radio Shack dealer franchise in 1984. The Lums owned and operated electronics stores in the Southgate Shopping Center and on Lincoln Way East, specializing in computers and auto sound and installation for 25 years. In semi-retirement, Donn continued as an authorized repair technician for Brother equipment. A member of the Torch Club, Donn was an avid reader, pursuing interests in history and model railroads. Donn enjoyed participating in ski club activities, especially helping children with special needs and wounded service persons learn to ski. Long walks with his little dog, Turbo, were part of his daily routine. He is survived by his wife, Sue Davison, whom he married in 1967 and with whom he renewed vows in 2014. Surviving family members include son, Mark, of Mechanicsburg, PA; daughter, Kathleen Dimino, husband Anthony, of Monrovia, CA; daughter, Holly Lum, of Northborough, MA; and grandchilden, Marcello and Bella Vi Dimino. Also surviving are brother, Martin Lum, wife Jennifer, sister, Nancy Lum, and their families. It was important to Donn that his body be donated to the Anatomy Gifts Registery for educational purposes. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Donn will always live in my memory. He was a rare character, and a man who appreciated and cherished a true friendship, and sincerely cared for other people deeply. I was so fortunate that he included me as one of his close friends. If I could speak to him now, I would say "THANK YOU, DONN, from the bottom of my heart!" May God rest his soul.

Donn spoke of his fight and struggle to survive from his disease the night I was saying goodbye to him and some other special friends at the end of the OHW festivities last year. I just couldn't believe it; I was so sure I would see him again during the next OHW in 2016, but, alas, it wasn't to be.
He was sch a gentle man and a perfect gentleman in every sense of the word. He fought bravely and faced his condition like a stoic philosopher, setting examples about life that we may follow. He was one of a kind. He was a man of principles, and he adhered to them unconditionally. I had the special privilege of knowing him and sharing a four-year friendship with him, and I wish I had met him long ago. I will remember him forever. I am so sorry that he had to go so prematurely and in such a terrible and painful way.
I offer my deepest condolences to his family, relatives and friends; may he rest in peace. Fare well, Donn. Fare well.

My sympathy to all of Donn's family. I didn't get to see Donn very often since ski club days, but, we did remain in contact with occasional emails. I sure will miss you, Donn. I always enjoyed our conversations. Sincerely, Ed
