Thomas Burleigh Obituary

Thomas J. Burleigh Sr., 67, of Punxsutawney, passed unexpectedly on March 6, 2019, at Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, Pa.

Tom was born on April 6, 1951, a son of the late Elizabeth (Hall) and Kay Burleigh.

Tom was a 1969 Youngsville High School graduate, where he excelled in football, basketball and track and field. He furthered his education at Edinboro University, graduating with a degree in elementary education.

After graduation, Tom worked in many different fields. He spent more than 35 years in the real estate industry as a realtor and real estate appraiser. Tom was the owner of Burleigh Appraisals. He loved his job and never considered it work. He always commented that he got paid for being "nosey."

In addition to his work, Tom had many passions throughout his life. He has been a Pittsburgh Steelers season ticket holder since 2003. He could be heard many Sunday afternoons cheering on the black and gold. He loved hunting, playing with his grandchildren, making others laugh, feeding the deer, photography, cookies and golfing.

Tom spent his life connecting with others, and this was his greatest strength. He made friends everywhere he went, and his warmth was palpable. He was an empathetic man, whose compassion for others was endless. Tom, T-Pa, the Bull, will be greatly missed.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Marty Sawyer Burleigh of Punxsutawney; his adoring children, Thomas J. Burleigh Jr. and wife Stephanie of Phoenixville, Katie L. Baker and husband Matt of Schwenksville, Emily Conrad and husband Josh of Punxsutawney and Jeff Dean of Punxsutawney; and his eight grandchildren, Lyla, Thomas, Allie, Hank, Luke, Owen, Miles and Henry. His grandchildren were his greatest joys and the light of his life. Tom is also survived by his loving sister Nancy Burleigh of Alexandria, Virginia, and his faithful Schnauzers Tess and Maddie.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Kay William "Bill" Burleigh.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney. A eulogy will be held around 6 p.m.

Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park, Warren, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's honor would be appreciated at the Clarion Area Football Boosters or the Punxsutawney Groundhog Little League.

Tom and Marty recently moved into our neighborhood in Port Richey Fl. Though it was only a few months, Tom was well liked and a great neighbor. Always a happy smile, a story or a new restaurant to talk about and a pat on the head for our handsome dog, as Tom called him, Buster. We will miss him. Marty, we are here if you need anything.

Nancy and The Burleigh Family Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always. I will remember when my Mom, Lois Burleigh Chappel, would have a Burleigh gathering at our house and both Bill and Tom would tell Aunt Liz to make sure to save some "Aunt Dodie beans" so when they got there was beans for them. So now they can get their of Aunt Dodie beans now.

On behalf of SBS we would like to send our condolences. On a personal level Tom worked with us and called me personally frequently with any appraisal problem he had. I remember getting a call from him at how excited he was when he was rushing to the hospital to see his grandchild birth. That must have been a few years ago. For 8 years I worked with him and he was always such a pleasure to talk to. He was always there for us when we needed him. Most of us here know him well and he will truly be missed. My heart goes out to the wonderful Marty. I've known you for just as long. Please let us know of there is anything we can do for you. Sincerely Matthew Ritz.

I have never met a finer person than Tom Burleigh. I met Tom through his brotherBill who was my basketball coach at Tidioute. Toms kindness, generosity, humor, and friendship were a gift that just flowed through him so naturally. For the last several years, we were treated to a Steelers football game in the fall with Tom and Marty. It was a day we looked so forward to and greatly enjoyed. Recently, Deedee went through some difficult health problems, every couple weeks Tom would print and send some humorous quotes and photos just as a way of keeping her spirits up. Also, Tom would go miles out of his way to stop by my moms home in Tidioute just to visit her. These are just examples of who Tom was, a very caring soul who was always fun to be around. Im going to miss him terribly.

There are those who pass like ships in the night,

Who are friends for awhile, then sail out of sight.

With never a backwards glance of regret

The ones we know briefly and quickly forget.

Then there are friends who sail together

Through quiet waters and stormy weather.

Sharing each other's joys and strife

It is friends like you that bring meaning to life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: A friend is one before whom I may be myself and think aloud. You have been that person to me, Tom. I will miss you more than words can express.

I grieve with the Burleigh family. I have been a friend with Tom and his family since we were toddlers. Our parents were friends and the Skelly and Burleigh kids would chase the cows and try to tip/ride them. Always brought extra shoes and socks. We played Little League with
Tom and Bill and the Holcombs. GV usually won. In sports and friendship Tom was always "Strong like Bull". I will miss Tom and Bill. God Speed my friend.

Tom was the middle of the 3 Burleigh boys (Bill, Tom, and Patrick). I was the runt and Tom always had my back. We spoke together about Christ when Bill and uncle Kay left this earth. I regret not finishing a book that was being written mainly for him. Though we did not talk much in these last years we could always easily pickup as we remenist of our days in Grand Valley.
I will miss you cousin and I hope that your family will be comforted in the love of Christ.
