Jay Peterman Obituary

Jay Peterman

August 23, 1961 - February 1, 2018

Jay Evan Peterman, age 56, passed away on February 1, 2018 at Kaiser Permanente Irvine Medical Center less than two months after being diagnosed with adenocarcinoma lung cancer.

Born on August 23, 1961, Jay was one of four children of Donald William Peterman and Sally Hutcheson Peterman. His family moved from Hermosa Beach to Palos Verdes Estates in 1963 where Jay enjoyed a happy, carefree childhood growing up in the open spaces of Lunada Bay. Jay found his passion for fishing early in life when he and his dad built a small fishing boat that he took out in King Harbor. While attending Palos Verdes High School, he pursued his love of fishing by working on commercial fishing boats.

At 25, Jay was inspired to follow in his father's professional footsteps in the Motion Picture Industry. He worked his way up to 1st Assistant Cameraman and spent much of his career working alongside his father and two brothers. His numerous film credits include Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Men in Black, Get Shorty and Point Break. His job gave him the opportunity to work in many beautiful locations including Buenos Aires, Fiji, Nassau Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Hawaii, Alaska and all over the mainland USA.

On September 20, 1994 Jay married his longtime love, Gloria Sifuentes, who he met while working at Lifecom Inc. in his early twenties. He was blessed with three beautiful children, son, Timothy; daughters, Michelle and Kimberly; and stepdaughter, Rachel. He settled his young family in Fountain Valley where he lived the last 26 years of his life. Jay was a devoted, protective and selfless father and more than anything, his family was always his priority.

Jay had a deep and abiding love for his country and always showed his patriotism by flying his American flag. He followed college and professional football and was a huge L.A. Dodgers fan from the time he was young.

He was naturally funny and attracted many friends with his charisma and quick sense of humor. He is remembered for his hysterical anecdotes and the nicknames that he gave to everyone. Jay had the ability to bring lightness to any situation and his innate sense of humor was present even in his last few days.

Jay's story ended way too soon to all who knew him. He was a light in the lives of so many. He will be loved always, never forgotten, and forever missed.

Jay is survived by his wife, Gloria Peterman; son, Timothy Peterman; daughters, Michelle Peterman and Kimberly Peterman; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Rachel and James Jonovic; stepgrandson, Aaron Jonovic; mother, Sally Peterman; sister, Diane Tschupp; brothers, Keith Peterman and Brad Peterman. His father, Donald Peterman, preceded him in death.

In keeping with Jay's wishes, a small private service was held in Huntington Beach on February 26, 2018. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing family is hard but when they pass too soon, it's even harder. I know we will all be together again but it still pains my heart.

Jay and his brother, Brad, and I went to Margate together. We used to hang out at the Luanda Bay Little League field and ride our skateboards around, looking for fun. We usually found it. His mom made the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever tasted.
