Anthony "Tony" M. Abell

GENESEO-Anthony "Tony" M. Abell, 96, of Geneseo, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 26, 2022, at Allure of Geneseo surrounded by his loving family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at St. Malachy Catholic Church. Father Daniel Gifford will officiate. Burial will follow at North Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Geneseo VFW – Don Cherry Post. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM, on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory – Geneseo Chapel. A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 3:30 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or St. Malachy Catholic Church.
Anthony was born June 23, 1925, to Columbus and Mary Alice (Mattingly) Abell, in Lebanon, KY. He was a 1943 graduate of St. Charles High School. On August 16, 1950, Anthony married Mary Ellen Bohart. She preceded him in death on June 14, 2011. Tony served proudly in the United States Army, during the Korean War. He spent his whole life as a farmer and loved every aspect of it. Tony was known for his kindness, which showed each year when he gave away all his sweet corn to friends and family. In addition to his love of farming, he enjoyed the family gardens which included both vegetables and flowers. He was a very faithful man who touched the lives of everyone he met. Tony was a devoted Catholic and was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church where he administered communion with Mary Ellen for over forty years. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving children, Roger (Nancy) Abell, Geneseo, Kathleen (Gaylan) Abell, Sun City, AZ, Diane (Dennis) White, Glendale, AZ, Mary Beth (Kevin) Peterson, Geneseo, Daniel (Christa) Abell, Potosi, WI, Jerry (Maggie) Abell, Geneseo, Rose Mary (Mark) Bouwens, Geneseo; eighteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, wife; daughter, Linda Ole; son, Paul Abell; grandson, Adam Abell; and eight siblings.
