Percy Atwater Obituary

Percy Lee Atwater, Jr.

September 14, 1941 - September 27, 2024

In loving memory of Percy Lee Atwater, Jr., a man whose life was a testament to resilience, hard work, and unwavering love for his family. Percy passed away peacefully on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the age of 83 at the Loft Rehabilitation and Nursing in Normal, Illinois.

Percy was born September 14, 1941, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to Percy Atwater Sr. and Mary Ella (Ellis) Atwater. Born of modest means, Percy learned the value of sacrifice early on. From a young age, he took on the mantle of provider for his mother and siblings, embodying a spirit of determination that would define his life. In his younger years, he met Gladys, who would become his beloved wife on November 9, 1962. Together, they dedicated themselves to building a life filled with love and hard work for their family. He became a skilled craftsman, teaching himself a variety of technical skills that he would later apply in his remarkable career at John Deere Harvester, where he dedicated 35 years of service before retiring on April 30, 2002.

Percy was more than just an employee; he was a self-made entrepreneur who saw potential everywhere. Whether working on automobiles, smoking BBQ ribs, or building structures, he was always busy. He would rise before dawn, working tirelessly, and his children often joked that he "never slept."

Percy was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Moline, Illinois, where he once had the honor of serving as a deacon for several years. He was also a proud member of the Masons. His commitment to the Masons was evident in everything he did, including the construction of a meeting place for the Temple; built by hand, brick by brick.

Percy Atwater, Jr. leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and love. Those left to honor Percy's memory include his children, Rebella "Ann" Perry (Tony), Marla and Chris Atwater. Grandchildren, Dominique, Jordan, Christine and Kairee Atwater, Jalen Perry, and Alexa Armstrong. Great-grandchildren, Tristan, Akhari and Axeton. He is also survived by siblings, Ellis, Lester, James and Lee Atwater, Richard Ellis, Florence Patterson (Maurice), Flora Taylor, Lizzie Eleby (Joe), Joyce Ellis-Scott (Charles), Patricia Guy; and a host of nephews, nieces, and relatives.

Percy was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Aretha Ann Atwater. Gladys, his wife of 61 years passed away a week after his death.

A celebration of his life will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Moline, Illinois, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2024, (livestreamed through the church's Facebook page). Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The burial will be in Hampton Township Cemetery. Rest in peace, Percy; you will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten.

I was truly privileged to know and work with Percy at JD Harvester Works. He was a beacon of strength and resilience to all of us. Sometimes, if I was having a bad day, I would go to Percy´s work station for guidance, and wisdom. Even after Percy retired, I would stop by his tavern and sit with him outside as he cooked ribs. Gentle by nature and strong in his convictions, I am proud to have known Percy Atwater. My thoughts and prayers are with the family in this time of grief and loss.
