Phyllis Webb Obituary

Phyllis A. Webb

June 6, 1943 - March 7, 2025

Phyllis A. Webb, 81, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Friday, March 7, 2025, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois.

Services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Rock Island First Church of the Nazarene, with Rev. Scott Casto and Rev. William Smith officiating. Visitation is 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Burial will be in Coal Valley Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family.

The former Phyllis Ann Middleton was born June 6, 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Magdalene (Smith) Middleton. She was raised by her mother and step-father, Magdalene and Claude Swarts. She married the love of her life, Gary Webb, on October 21, 1961, in Ottumwa. She worked as a librarian for 33 ½ years, most of that time spent at the Robert R. Jones Library in Coal Valley, from which she retired at the age of 70.

Phyllis was a member of Rock Island First Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed crafting of all kinds, and especially enjoyed oil painting and sewing. She also liked working on puzzles and finding deals at the Goodwill.

She absolutely loved talking to people and truly cared about what they had going on in their lives. Affectionately known as "Memaw", nothing brought Phyllis more joy than spending time with her beloved grandchildren, children and husband. She was instrumental in starting and helping run the baby pantry at the Coal Valley Church of the Nazarene for over 15 years. It still thrives today at the Colona church.

She is survived by her husband, Gary; two children, David (Terri) Webb of Port Byron, Illinois, and Sheree Chandler of Coal Valley; grandchildren, C.J. Chandler, Destiny (Mark) Moore, Dustin (Kayla) Caras, Nicholas (Shaelynn) Webb, Holly Carter, Travis Chandler, and Kristin (Shane) Jankowski; four great-grandchildren including Lennox; siblings, Joyce Aubrey, George (Linda) Middleton, Carol (Dwayne) Kalous, and Toni Whiteside; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Martin Chandler; and brothers, Max and Bob Middleton.

I saw Phyllis a lot working at the libraries in Coal Valley. My children read every book for kids in the smaller library. My grandson partipated in a lot of programs from events, to Lego night and won prizes at readathon December.
I was sorry to hear of her passing. We worked together at sorting and collecting baby clothes for the Baby pantry at Nazarene Church both Coal Valley and Colona and was sorry to miss visitation. My husband boweled last night and I couldn’t catch get a ride to visitation but definitely wanted to be there for Gary to tell him what a wonderful person she was. My husband and I always teased her about her yellow car and throwing baby items in it. We wil miss her. She was a stable in Coal Valley.
