Gaillard Krewer Obituary

Gaillard Krewer

Mr. Krewer was born in Percy, Illinois, son of Fred and Mary (Danley) Krewer, and grew up in Valmeyer, Illinois. At Valmeyer High School at the age of sixteen he met his first and only girlfriend, Patricia Ann Steingrubey, who became his wife on June 17, 1950. Mr. Krewer attended Southern Illinois University and graduated from Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Missouri, in 1951 with a degree in mining engineering. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, 1952 – 1954. He was employed by several mining firms across the country and retired as Vice President of Operations of Linwood Mining and Minerals in 1997 after 30 years with the company.

Mr. Krewer was a founding member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Blue Grass, Iowa, and was an avid supporter of area Girl Scouts. He was a member of several Barbershopper choruses; and in his youth, sang at many religious and civic functions.

Mr. Krewer is survived by his wife of 73 years; his children, Dr. Keith (Cheryl) Krewer, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Kathy (Tom Flaig) Krewer, Orion, Illinois; Mary (Steve) Godwin, Blue Grass, Iowa; and Trish (Steve) Wilger, Bettendorf, Iowa; grandchildren, Emma Krewer, Matthew Krewer, Rebecca Krewer, Nathan Truninger, Malhon Godwin, Emily Godwin, Samual Godwin, and Ian Wilger; and great-grandchildren Natalie Luchman, Cody and Kailey Krewer, Scarlett Schultz, and Jackson Truninger. He was a devoted husband and father, and an indulgent grandfather and great-grandfather.

He enjoyed antique autos and traveling, having been to all the state capitals in the continental United States (and with a travel trailer to most of them!) He also enjoyed listening to Big Band and Frank Sinatra, doing crossword puzzles, and reading, and he had a great sense of humor.

A private service was held at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Interment was at the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois or St. Jude Hospital.
