R. W. "Skip" Bishop
June 27, 1945-October 25, 2022
MOLINE-R. W. "Skip" Bishop, former Executive Director of the Youth Service Bureau of Rock Island County and long-time Moline resident, died Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at home.
Per his wishes cremation rites will be accorded and ashes interred at Moline Memorial Park. There will be no service. Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, is entrusted with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Lung Transplant Program at either the University of Chicago Medical Center or the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.
Russell William Bishop was born June 27, 1945 in Jacksonville, Illinois to Bernard E. and Vivian M. (Bauser) Bishop. He is a 1964 graduate of Moline High School where he participated in basketball and baseball. In 1972 he graduated from St. Ambrose College with a degree in Psychology. In 1985 he earned his Master's Degree in Administration and Planning in Social Work from the University of Tennessee.
Skip's professional career was centered on providing counseling/therapy services to young people and their families. His early experiences were at the Chazen Institute in Tucson, Arizona and with the Florida Division of Youth Services in Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach.
Upon his return to the Quad Cities in 1976 he joined the staff of the Youth Service Bureau of Rock Island County where he was employed for 25 years, the first 12 as a Clinician and Clinical Supervisor and the final 13 years as the organization's Executive Director. He retired from YSB in 2006 due to health-related issues.
He served in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1966-1972 and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. Previous associations include: Moline Boys Group Home Board, Moline Rotary Club, United Way Agency Director's Association, and Valley View Golf Club. He appreciated a good book, a round of golf with old friends with an occasional birdie the golf gods willing, a coy smile, and towards the end a life meaningfully spent.
Skip is survived by his three younger siblings: sister Gayle Bishop, Moline; brother Stan (Barb) Bishop, Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and sister Lynn (Joe) Chlumsky, Cary, North Carolina.

Skip was like a 2nd father to me. A lifelong friend of my dad, he would drive me to sporting events as a kid whenever my parents had a schedule conflict, and he became sort of a good luck charm for me. As a 12 year old, I hit my first and only home run with Skip in the bleachers. He described it to my dad as a "frozen rope."
Skip was a great friend to all who knew him. Rest in peace.
