He graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1966 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in finance and marketing from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, graduating in January 1971. There he met his loving wife, Ellen Terry. The couple was united in marriage on July 25, 1970, in West Allis, Wisconsin, and married 55 years.

He then worked for Besser Company as a manager in Boone and Sioux City, living in Sioux City and retiring in 2014. After retirement, he and Ellen moved to the Quad Cities. Tom proudly served in the United States Army and Army Reserves from 1971 to 1981.

Tom was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and several area shooting clubs. His hobbies included hunting with his Labradors, trap, sporting clays, and skeet shooting, dog obedience training, agility, and hunt tests.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ellen; children, Meg (Dan) Byrne of Bettendorf, Neal Schmidt of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Andy (Traci Olinger) Schmidt of St. Paul, Minnesota; granddaughter, Cate Byrne of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister, Louise Kerstein of Pewaukee, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Maureen (Joe Hodges) Jestes of Fort Myers, Florida, and Cindy Terry of Cudahy, Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved Labrador, Cabo.
