Our family is saddened to announce the death of Gary Leroy Tiegs on August 9, 2022. He was 73 years old.
Gary was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. His life centered around his family. Gary gave his all to everyone he cared about. Gary was enthusiastic, funny, loving, and caring. He was calm, decisive, reassuring and dependable. Gary was always quick to smile, laugh, and see the best in people. A passion for learning and teaching led him to a career in public education.
Gary served five years in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He served on the USS Yorktown and supervised a youth center while stationed in Germany. Upon returning, he enrolled at University of California Riverside and earned a bachelor's degree in history followed by a teaching credential. Later Gary earned master's degrees in history and school administration.
His career spanned from teaching Kindergarten through high school. He moved his family to Ramona to take the position of Principal at James Dukes Elementary School for the next 11 years. While at James Dukes he signed and commented on every single report card during his time there. Following that, he became Principal of Montecito High School for six years until retirement.
Gary lived his life giving to others. He loved his family, friends, and life. He lived a robust life with enthusiasm, laughter, and sharing with others. He was the rock of our family and we have the greatest memories of him including traveling, camping, and stories around the campfire. He loved to barbecue and make dinners for our family. We miss him every day.
A celebration of life will be held July 2, 2023 at 1 PM at San Vicente Resort, Ramona, CA.
