Catherine Wells Obituary

Cathy Wells passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, surrounded by family. She was 75.

Born on November 8, 1949, in Miles City, Montana, Cathy was the daughter of Charles and Mary LaBree. She grew up in Glendive with her siblings Judy, Bill, and Linda, in a home full of spirited conversations, close-knit bonds, and good humor.

Cathy began her professional life in cosmetology, where she quickly became known for her skill, leadership, and professionalism. Her career took her far, eventually becoming the head of the Colorado State Cosmetology Board, and she also helped oversee the board of Guides and Outfitters. She loved her work, took great pride in it, and mentored many along the way.

She married Del Ray Johnson (b. 1945-2024) in 1969, and together they had two sons, Hutch born in 1969 and Brandon born in 1971. Del Ray Johnson, born in 1945, passed away in 2024. After their divorce, Cathy made a new start in the Denver area, where she built a fulfilling life of work, friendships, and family. In 1982, she married Clay Wells (1934-2017) of Aurora, Colorado. Cathy and Clay shared many happy years until his passing.

Cathy had a lifelong love of driving, whether it was a cross-country motorhome trip or just a ride through town. After retiring from public service with the state, she spent nearly 20 years working for Enterprise Rent a Car as a driver. She enjoyed collecting Precious Moments figurines, traveling, and was always up for a lively exchange with her siblings. She loved her family deeply. Cathy also had a special place in her heart for dogs (Muffin & CC).

In January of this year, she moved to Moorhead, Minnesota, where she spent her final months surrounded by love and laughter.

Cathy is survived by her sister Judy, her brother Bill, her sons Hutch and Brandon, her stepdaughter Leanne Wells, and her grandchildren: Tanner, Taylor, Marit, Tryce, Luke, Quin, and Talon.

In lieu of flowers, Cathy would have appreciated donations made to the following charities she regularly supported: American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in honor of her love for animals, Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Hospital, or Shriners Hospital.

She will be remembered for her fierce independence, warm heart, sense of humor, and the love she gave to those around her. Cathy's spirit lives on in her family, friends, and the many lives she touched.

A private service will be held at Boulger Funeral Home and Celebration of Life Center, Fargo, North Dakota. A Celebration of Life service will be held later date in Denver, CO.
