Alvin Morgan Obituary

Alvin L. Morgan

May 9, 1928 - June 20, 2025

Alvin L. Morgan, 97, went to be with the Lord forever on June 20, 2025 at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, S.D.

Al was born May 9, 1928 at Seymour, Ind., first-born of two children to Lawrence and Hazel (Ackeret) Morgan. Early childhood was spent in Hope, Ind. Following the death of Al's father in 1937, the family moved to Sheboygan, Wis. in 1938 when Hazel married Herman Boehm.

Al was united in marriage to Fay H. Nack of Sheboygan, Wis. on May 14, 1949. There were two children born to this marriage, Lawrence Alvin and Sara Fay, both of whom were born in England.

Entering the Army in 1946, Al stayed for a 26-year career, retiring in 1972 as full Colonel. During that period, he spent 13 years overseas in several different places, ten of which were with family. The entire period was spent with the Corps of Engineers in diverse assignments. A distinguished period of service was recognized by many awards and decorations topped by two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Army's second highest award of achievement.

Following his retirement, Al completed a degree in business, graduating magna cum laude from Black Hills State University. He worked for a period of eight years for the First Western Bank of New Underwood. After that, he engaged himself in church and Gideon work where he remained active until the end of his earthly life. A lover of the Word of God, Al taught Sunday School for a period of more than 50 years. This love of the Word and sharing it was manifested in his work with the Gideons International. He joined the Gideons in 1965, holding many offices including SD State President, and otherwise staying active. He often said that his service in the Gideon ministry would be the last thing to go because it could touch so many people for a given effort.

Al was preceded to heaven by his wife, Fay; and his son, Lawrence. He is survived by a daughter, Sara (Steve) Likness of Elon, N.C.; four grandchildren, Joanna (Tyler) Pendleton of Greensboro, N.C., Sonja Likness of Durham, N.C., Joel Likness of Durham, N.C., and Aaron Likness of Hudson, N.Y.; five great-granddaughters, Savannah Ruth Likness and Zoe Reese Likness born to Joel and Tabetha, and Neve Rosalie Pendleton, Ruby Fay Pendleton, and Elaine Frances Pendleton born to Tyler and Joanna.

Memorial gifts may be made to The Gideons International (Black Hills Camp) and addressed to PO Box 2067 in Rapid City, SD 57709.

Al's Memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Parkview Evangelical Free Church in Rapid City. Arrangements made through Kirk Funeral Home.

What to say? Al and Fay too, were an awesome Christian influence for my wife and myself and we´re saddened by your loss. We celebrate with you knowing as Believers, where they are now and that because of them, many more people know Jesus Christ. Blessings...Rich&Gayla Meyer
