Carole Anne & I met as grad students @ USD Indian Club party & left that night for law confence in Tulsa. We took her old VW that had no reverse! That was the beginning of a very close friendship for the past 34 yrs. We had many exciting times & millions of laughs. Bless you Cante. I can only imagine how hard it must be for you now, but she endured many difficult times in her early life & overcame them. I know you, as her daughter will have the strength to do great things, too. I am praying for you. Michelle Sheridan

A Flower Forever

For Maske Carole Ann Heart
by Lydia Whirlwind Soldier

Snowflakes flutter and
flash in the ripples of wind
like memories that linger and
leave an empty ache
as piercing as a missing friend
four days prairie wind sings
return her to places she had been
owl calls in the glimmer
of pure light, in the colors
of dawn, evening and night

like a forever flower
that bobs, weaves
in the southern wind
like a cottonwood seed
she floats, drifts
to a better place
leaving memories that
keep her alive
for as long as we live

Cante,
All my sympathies to you and your family. Your mother was a sunshine of light whenever she entered a room. I'll never forget her laugh and how she could have everyone laughing. She was an excellent mother to you, I remember her bringing you along with her everywhere she went when you were born....you even traveled with her through a blizzard from Rapid back to Bismarck with members of the Title IV Resource Center. I shall keep all my memories of her as most of them still make me smile. I am also keeping Carol Anne, you and your family in my prayers.

My condolences go out to the family of Carole Ann. Indian Country is left with a huge void but I believe Carole Ann will hear our prayers on the other side. Cante, I send you love and prayers as I know how big of a loss the passing of your Ina is. Your mother was a good friend of mine and a good friend of my mother's and I take some comfort knowing they are laughing together in the spirit world. Your mother was a very powerful Lakota woman and I know she raised you to carry on all that she started. Pray to her in hard times and she will hear. Be strong!

To the family of Carole Ann: My codolences to Cante, Mom and to all of Indian Country because we have lost an incredible advocate of Native American Issues. Carole Ann fought for our rights to secure quality education and health care, an inspiring example to all of us. There was a presence about her whenever she entered a room and her wit/humor was second to none. She was great! She worked tirelessly and gave us her best but I think the Lord saw that she needed rest so he took her. May she rest in peace and when you look at the stars at night, she has to be the brighest and prettiest star ever!! This is from her Apache friend way down south...,

To the Family of Carole:
We humbly acknowledge that in the life of each of us there are times of events and experiences when all our thoughts and feelings seem to impose silence. At this time, in the passage of our dear sister, we are turning our eyes not upon our feet where no help can come but we are lifting them upward unto the Holy Ones. Foremost, we thank God for the life and character of Carole Anne Heart, who sang, prayed, walked and laughed with us here on earth. We did not lose her when God gave her to us and so we have not lost her by her return to Him, even though the sun went down while it was yet day in her life, we believe it has risen for her in eternal glory. May God give that strong faith which trusts and ties in courageously and confidently with the consolations of God’s grace and love and enable you to carry on in faithfulness and fortitude. Carole and I attended Law School at UNM in Albuquerque some 30+ years ago. Take Care,

It's a sad time for our family, for our people, for our nation. Our loss is great, but now we have Carole Anne on our side in the spirit world. I imagine her sitting with Cante's Unci, Marilyn, laughing and carrying on like they always did. She's probably got our ancestors laughing and enjoying all her stories.

Cante, I hope you feel all the love of this nationwide family that care for you and your mother. She created family everywhere you went and her legacy will continue.

I'm sorry I can't be with you there right now. You are always in my heart, in my prayers
