Charles Gries Obituary


Charles W. "Bill" Gries Jr. passed away peacefully Feb. 10, 2011, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was born April 3, 1945, in Reading.

Bill retired after 43 years of federal service. He was the coordinator of the space shuttle landing activities at Edwards Air Force Base and was the air space manager.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Patricia Gries; son, William Gries (Elizabeth); grandchildren, William and Isabelle Gries; brothers: Robert F. Gries Sr., and wife, Agnes, Reading; Gerald T. Gries, and wife, Mary, Fernandina Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Gries Sr., and his mother, Mary Isobel (Weaver) Gries, formerly of Reading.

Services will be held at Our Lady of the Pines on Thursday, Feb. 17, at noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Pikes Peak Hospice in memory of Charles W. Gries, 825 E. Pikes Peak Ave., Ste. 600, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

It was a pleasure working with Bill. He always had a joke or funny comment to lighten the mood even in the middle of the night as we waited to see if the space shuttle was coming to Edwards. My condolences to the family.
