He was the husband of his devoted wife, Jane N. (Schofer) Frankhouser Pfautz, for 43 years.
Born in Palmyra, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Sallie M. (Heverling) Pfautz.
He was retired from Dana Corporation, where he worked in the engineering department for 35 years.
He was a graduate of Bernville High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He also attended Albright College and was a graduate of the former Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute.
He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Mount Penn, where he served as an elder and as church treasurer.
He was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program for 10 years.
Charles immensely enjoyed the game of bridge and played duplicate bridge twice a week at The Bridge Room, Reading. He also enjoyed bowling and chess and was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.
He was a loving parent to all his children.
He is survived by five daughters: Patricia A., wife of Charles H. Weiser, Reading; Kay E., wife of Henry Sheetz, Tucson, Ariz.; Cheryl M., wife of Joseph Guthier, Cumru Township; Susan F. Pfautz, partner of Donald Freese, Chadds Ford; and Maureen M., wife of John Stopper, Reinholds; and five stepdaughters: Jacklyn C., wife of Albert R.D. Bowers, Reading; Georgene A., wife of William Smith, The Villages, Fla.; Susan J. Boyer, Shillington; Patty J., wife of John Holdredge, Tunkhannock; and Beth A., wife of John Stanislaw, Kenhorst; and a stepson, John R. Frankhouser, husband of Debbie, West Lawn.
He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 15 stepgrandchildren: Jennifer Roth, Beth Roth, Charles Guthier, Angela Gable, Mary-Elizabeth Guthier, Sarah Diaz, Andrew LaRue, Peter LaRue, Luke Stopper, Benjamin Stopper, Kate Stopper, Pamela Ingram, Stephen Piontek, Jeffrey Piontek, Lizbeth Kulak, Stephanie Wachowicz, Daniel Smith, Matthew Boyer, Becky Burke, Robert Frankhouser, Jennifer Bensinger, Sarah Frankhouser, Laura Holdredge, Holly Holdredge, Stacy Stanislaw and Allison Stanislaw.
There are also 15 great-grandchildren, 20 step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his second wife, Frances (Varichione) Pfautz, in 1957, and by a grandchild, Frances E. Gable, in 1996.
Services will be private in the Henninger Funeral Home, Reading, at the convenience of the family.
