Dwight Powell Obituary


Dwight R. Powell, 82, of Exeter Township, passed on Sunday, May 10, 2015 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

He was the husband of Barbara J. (Smith) Powell, with whom he celebrated their 62nd anniversary on April 4.

Born in Tulsa, OK, he was a son of the late James Dewey and Ottilla (Marx) Powell.

Dwight was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War and a graduate of Virginia Tech, with honors, in 1958, with a degree in Civil Engineering.

He was a member of Schwarzwald U.C.C.-Jacksonwald, where he was a former consistory member, a member of the Union Lodge #479 F&AM and the Rajah Shrine (Mounted Patrol), the trails construction manager for the Schuylkill River Greenway Association, where he was honored with a bridge-naming in 2014, 20-year former member of the Exeter Township Planning Commission, The International Brotherhood of Magicians and was a founding member of the Swing Fever Big Band.

Dwight was a civil engineer, owning Powell Engineering Contractors since 1971. He previously had been a construction superintendent for Windsor Service.

In addition to his wife, Dwight is survived by two sons, G. Kirby Powell, husband of Dr. Debra L. Powell of New Jerusalem, and Glen R. Powell, husband of Tracy L. of Exeter Township; one daughter, Deborah J., wife of Kenneth Fleischmann of Ellicott City, MD; seven grandchildren: Kyle, Rachel, Kelsey, Andrew, Lauren, Taylor and Connor; two great-grandchildren, Colton and Mackenzie; and one brother, Bruce M. Powell, husband of Dorothy of Fayetteville, AK.

He was predeceased by his brother, Donald.

Visitation with family and friends will be held from 3:00-4:00 p.m., with Masonic Services beginning at 4:00 p.m., followed by a religious service on Friday, May 15, 2015 in the Lutz Funeral Home, Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Ave., Mt. Penn. Interment private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Antioch Cemetery Association, C/O Virginia Erwin, 224 Plum Lane, Cumberland, VA 23040.

It has been an extreme pleasure knowing Dwight for over 20 years. He always amazed us with his magic or his jokes. We shared many family holidays and functions with him and he will be missed.
