Gwinnie Allen Obituary


Gwennie B. Allen, 99, of Reading, PA, formerly of Pottsville, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning in her residence with her family by her side.

Born in Pottsville on August 30, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Shed-rick and Gwennie (Harvey) Snowell.

She was a member of

Bethel AME Church, Pottsville and its Missionary Society. Gwennie was also, considered one of the "Mothers" of the church who provided guidance to its youth.

Gwennie was especially fond of her granchildren and loved her family. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting in her spare time.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, McKinley Allen in 1962; one son, McKinley Allen Jr., who died in January 2007; brothers: Shedrick, Charles, and James Snowell; and sisters: Mary Wallace, Laverna Simms, and Ethel Basker-ville; and one grandchild, Allen.

Gwennie is survived by three daughters: Laverna, wife of James Beard, Pottsville; Anna, wife of Alvin Coleman, Reading; Brenda, wife of John Case, Reading; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 11th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Darlene Barr officiating at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA. A viewing will begin at 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Schuylkill Haven.

The family requests memorial contributions in Gwennie's name be sent to Bethel AME Church, 816 Laurel Blvd., Pottsville, PA 17901.

Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
