He was the husband of JoAnne (Michalsky) Bernhart.
John was born in Reading on Dec. 23, 1933, the son of the late George R. and Anna D. (Schell) Bernhart.
He worked as a wood pattern maker at the former Penn Steel, Hamburg.
He was a member of the Daniel Boone Rod and Gun Club and a lifetime member of the Numismatist Assoc. He loved his dog, Oscar.
John graduated from Reading High School in 1951.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by two daughters: Janice L. Zebert, of Mount Penn, and Susan N., wife of Brian Arentz, of Shillington, and a son, William, husband of JoBeth Bernhart, of Elizabethtown.
John is also survived by three brothers: George R., of Wyomissing; Harry J., of Lower Alsace; and James W., of Shillington.
He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Kyle W. and Jeffrey M. Zebert; Hannah M., Hayden J., Benjamin J., Sophia J. and Josiah W. Bernhart; and Kenneth T., Julia C., Allen J. and John C. Arentz.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Summer S. Bernhart.
Services from the Sanders Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 1501 N. 11th St., Reading, will be at 10 A.M. on Thursday, June 30.
Friends are invited to call Wednesday 6:30-8:30 P.M. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Alsace Cemetery, Muhlenberg Twp.
The family requests no flowers. Contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Berks County, 1801 N. 11th St., Reading, PA 19604.
