Murray Dashe Obituary

Murray Dashe’s incredible life began in Reading, PA, born to a beloved doctor and charitable mother on May 30, 1942. He enlisted in the US Army and rose to the rank of sergeant as an infantry squad leader concluding with the 101st Airborne Division and decorated for his service during the Vietnam War. Under the GI Bill, he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Albright College and a master’s degree in industrial relations from St. Francis University. From shoe sales to CEO of a Fortune 500 company, ever the hard worker, Dashe’s career reached unimaginable levels. He was President and CEO of Cost Plus World Market until retiring in 2005. He continued serving on several boards of directors. One of our favorite photos shows dad smiling big, arms crossed, in front of the NASDAQ billboard after opening the stock exchange in 2003. Our dad had a superpower. He could spot excellence in people and make them feel it. His colleagues called him “Honest Murray,” as tough as he was funny. He balanced both with unique poise. The same man who led impressive meetings with the world’s most powerful business leaders, once busted his lip open during lunch after pretending to be a walrus with a set of chopsticks at his boardroom table. A good ‘ole fashioned inappropriate joke around the dinner table was known to send him into an uninhibited cackle. If you knew Murray, you knew that sound. He couldn’t make it through a joke without laughing at it before the punchline. The rest of us couldn’t make it through one of his jokes without laughing at him. He loved old cars and cool boats, all friendly dogs, and a loud fart machine. A fierce drive in business may only have been surpassed in emotion by the love he felt for his own children. Despite the doctor’s estimation, even in the end, he held up his commitment to his family, waiting until all made it to his room to be by his side in those precious final moments. He was 79. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Meyer and Norma Dashe. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Robin Dashe; his beloved children Courtney Turnbull, Brett Dashe, and Summer Dashe; his son-in-law, Dave Turnbull, and soon-to-be son-in-law, Jon Mayhall; his sister, Eve Matisoff; and three grandchildren who called him “Grumpy.” While this grief could buckle our knees, we stand proud now for him as he has done so many times for us. A celebration of life will be held summer 2022 near his home in Danville, CA. Donations can be made to The Kidney Project in his memory. When prompted on the donation site, memories and notes may be sent to [email protected].

Murray was a friend at PSU, remember him "tooling" around in his Karman Ghia. He attended my wedding, so sorry we lost connection through the years.

I was fortunate enough to get to know Murray through business. I was a Wall Street analyst that covered Cost Plus before, during, and after Murray was the CEO. When I moved to SF for business, we got to know each other even better. I remember him telling me some interesting stories of his aviation skills. He was always teaching - giving me pointers about retail that I was unaware of. Murray was a terrific CEO, but more importantly, a good, good man. I will always remember him, fondly. May his memory be a blessing. Alan Rifkin

We became friends when he helped me with my VW when we both worked at Pomeroys in Delaware. Kept in touch over the years. Denver. The pool guy had to have a pool in Thousand Oaks (through solid rock!). The airplane from the movie.

Always SO proud of you kids. Always had fun with boats. And airplanes. And cars. And life.

Wishing him a happy birthday 5/30.

Wishing his family all the good memories.

My memories of Murray go back many years, even then it was apparent that he was headed for great success. His intelligence, talent, drive and kindness all contributed to it. He had an especially close relationship with my Dad, and Murray always visited him when he came back to Reading.
I know he was incredibly proud of his beautiful family. Please accept Elliott's and my deepest sympathy on the loss of this special man. May his memory be a blessing.... always.

I knew Murray ever since second grade. He lived at 610 N 10th St and I lived at 537 N 11th. We both went to 10th & Green Grade School. But much more importantly, we were both in the Reading JCC's Pack 10 Den 4 of Cub Scouts. Every Tuesday, after school, we´d each get to the home of our Den mother, Harriett Leisawitz. We did crafts at the Leisawitz home and also go across the street to City Park to play sports.

Around 6 o´clock, Murray and I would be picked up by his dad, Dr. Meyer Dashe, in his Buick. We´d go to their house and I´d be invited to join them for dinner, and then to watch the Milton Berle show on TV!! I´d then walk home-in those days, that was as safe as could be! I always enjoyed Murray and I don´t think we ever had an argument!!! But he sure had a great laugh!

I am so sorry to learn that he´s gone. Baruch Dayan HaEmet.

May his merit be a shield for his family, and may his legacy bring his family tremendous blessings!
