Roy Underhill Obituary


Roy S. Underhill, 74, of Exeter Township, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018, in Penn State Health-Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of Karen K. (Kelchner) Underhill.

Born in New York City, N.Y., he was the son of the late Roy T. and Margaret M. (Dunham) Underhill.

Roy graduated from Central Columbia County High School in 1962 and then became a member of the U.S. Air Force. He then attended Bloomsburg University where he received his degree in education in 1970. Roy was a teacher for 35 years at Exeter High School, teaching social studies. He was the chair of the Social Studies department and advisor for the Key Club as well as a founding member of the Exeter Community Education Foundation. Roy was a baseball coach and umpire as well as a golf coach and avid golfer. He also enjoyed volunteering at many sporting events.

In addition to his wife Karen, Roy is survived by one son, Matthew S., husband of Vicki, Florida; and one daughter, Malia S., wife of Glenn Bowen III, Schuylkill Haven; and a loving Pop Pop to five grandchildren: Gwenyth, Nicholas, Glenn IV, Roslyn and Veronica. Also surviving are one sister, Lorraine Hinde; and brothers, George and Robert.

He is predeceased by one sister, Arlene Gamblin Finnegan.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. in Lutz Funeral Home Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Ave., Reading.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Exeter Community Education Foundation, 200 Elm St., Reading, PA 19606.

I have known Roy for over 30 years he was a kind and positive gentleman and teacher who loved his family, kids and grandkids! ❤And he loved golf and was great at it! I will miss seeing him! My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time! I know he will be missed by everyone!
