Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Paul T. McDevitt, on April 29, 2010. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, June 3, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Susanna (Posivak) Dutko.
Sophie was a 1951 graduate of St. Peter's Catholic High School. She was employed as the office manager for Astor Knitting Mills, Inc., for 12 years, and as a Secretary of McDevitt & Company CPA firm for 25 years, last working in 1993.
After retiring from the business world, Sophie dedicated almost all of her free time to teaching math to the children of St. Peter's School, up until November 2015. For all of her tireless efforts, Sophie was honored by Bishop Barres with the 2014 Bishop's Distinguished Catholic Alumni Award. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, West Reading.
Sophie is survived by her daughter, Dr. Lisa McDevitt, Mohnton, wife of Sam J. Duca Jr.; her son, Thomas P. McDevitt, Gypsum, Colorado; her sisters, Helen Graczyk and Catherine, wife of Richard Wentzel, both of Laureldale; her niece, Susan, wife of Craig Goodwin; and her great-niece, Olivia Goodwin, all of Mohnton. She is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.
In addition, she is survived by her relatives in Siroke and Kocise, Slovakia, who she last visited in 2013.
Sophie was predeceased by her sister, Mary Dutko, and brother, John Dutko.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. McDevitt on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, located at the intersection of Lakeview Drive and Franklin Street, West Reading, PA 19611. There will be no services at the funeral home. Those attending the Mass should travel directly to the church. Interment will be held at Gethsemane Cemetery.
It has been suggested that, in lieu of flowers and because of Mrs. McDevitt's dedication to the parochial schools, please make contributions to Sacred Heart School, 701 Franklin St., West Reading, PA 19611, or St. Peter's School, 225 S. Fifth St., Reading, PA 19602.
The family would especially like to thank her caregivers at the Highlands, who allowed her to take this journey with grace, dignity and respect.
The Kopicki-Bradley Funeral Home, Inc., Reading, is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. McDevitt, I am so very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. When we talked about one month ago, you made me aware of the situation. I, too, valued that conversation. My mother (Marlene Fetter) said she remembers talking with your mother a few times when your Aunt Betty lived across the street from my mother. Please accept my mother's and my sincerest condolences. I am sorry to hear that Aunt Sophie has passed away.
I have many great memories of Aunt Sophie when she used to visit Siroke, in 90's in Slovakia.
I will never forget You Teta Zofka and ujo Palko as we used to call you and your husband, although it's been a while since we've been in touch.
Lisa and Thomas, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. (You may not know me but I know you from your mum's talk as well as her sisters Helen and Catherin)
Please also be informed that my Grandma Maria Stofanakova(Posivak, Stofko), cousin of your mum Sophie, has passed away too just today on 24th April at 10:00 CET.
I believe they've met each other again after a while.
... May Lord remembers them when they come into His kingdom.
