Born in Heckscherville, Cass Township, he was a son of the late Metro and Mary Chaposky Bardon.
He attended Cass Township schools and joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, having served aboard USS Carter Hall (LSD-3) as a Machinist's Mate Second Class. He later graduated from Penn State with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as an estimator and salesperson in the heating and air conditioning industry.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Minersville. He was also a member of the New Minersville Fire Company, the Black Diamond Navy Club and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and David Barton; and a sister, Marie Burns.
Surviving are his wife, the former Joan Pogirski; three children: George Barton and his wife, Diane, Newark, Delaware, Michelle Gahres and her husband, John, Wernersville, and Walter Robert Barton and his lifelong companion, Lisa Buck.
He is also survived by six grandchildren: Vanessa, John, Amber Michael, Randy Gahres, Kate Gahres and Jessie Gahres; four great-grandchildren: Patrick Michael, Jackson Johnson, Ja-von Johnson and Kamryn Gahres; three brothers: Paul Barton, Bellefonte, Michael Barton, Primrose, and Raymond Barton, Pottsville; and nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday from 6 p.m. at Dutcavich Funeral Home, Minersville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the charity of the giver's choice. Interment with military honors will be at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township.

Joan, I'm deeply sad for you. Living across the street from you and Walter and your children gave me such a sense of community. Walter always had a smile and a minute to spend chatting no matter how busy. May you be comforted by your memories.
