Margaret Maughan Obituary

Margaret "Maudie" Maughan Margaret "Maudie" Maughan passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family members on Friday, December 20, 2013. Maudie is survived by her husband and best friend of 62 years, Mike Maughan of Lakeport; five sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dawn Maughan of Virginia, Alfred and Wendy Maughan of Vacaville, CA, Jerry and Sherryl Maughan of San Leandro, CA, Philip and Jill Maughan of San Lorenzo, CA, and Kevin and Candi Maughan of Rhode Island; two sisters, Annie McBride of Calistoga, and Phyl MacDonald of Santa Rosa; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1931, Maudie and Mike met when she was in her late teens. They moved to Canada and were married in 1951. The two oldest sons, Michael and Alfred, were born in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1953 and 1956. Moving to Oakland, CA, in 1956, three more sons followed; Jerry in 1957, Philip in 1959 and Kevin in 1961. While husband Mike worked more than 35 years for PG&E, Maudie ran the house and raised her five sons, providing all with the love and comfort that she naturally brought to the family. Her sharp wit, intelligence, and sense of humor permeated everything about her and her role as wife and mother. She demonstrated a remarkable ability to make everyone laugh with her "Lucy" moments. As the boys grew up, Maudie began working various jobs outside the home, including memorable stints with Gerber Baby Foods in Oakland, the linen department at Macy's in San Leandro, and a long association as a realtor with Coldwell-Banker. Over the years Maudie was the driving force behind several changes in residence as she and Mike changed homes several times, always stepping up a level as finances were stretched to access better, nicer, and more valuable houses. In 1986 Mike and Maudie moved to Lakeport and have resided here in active retirement for 27 years since. A popular member of the Walnut Beach Marina association, Maudie served various positions including treasurer and secretary. Maudie was renowned for serving as hostess for numerous social activities, parties, and holiday celebrations at the marina clubhouse, with her outgoing personality, infectious laugh, and love of people and life. Maudie was a long time guest at the Elks Lodge # 2704 and valued member of the Lakeport Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) ladies. Known by many, loved by all, Maudie is missed, but left behind many, many memories that will be treasured by all who knew her well. A short memorial service for Maudie is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2013, at Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary, 1625 North High Street, Lakeport. Mom, much has changed since you left us. Keith, who you prayed for ever day, lost his fight and followed you. Maybe it was because he didn't have you here pulling for him. And Dad came here to Al and I, for such a short time. Even though you always told me Dad would want to live with us, it wasn't as much as he wanted to stay with you. I tryed my best, but his heart was broken. And his heart always belonged with yours. So he left us to spend eternity with you, where will be forever happy. We miss you all.
Good night Love....

Mom: You gave birth to 5 little boys and you often reminded us "You are bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh". You always made me laugh when you claimed to have been 7 feet tall before you started giving birth. We are all so proud to be your sons and we always tried to make you proud of us. Life gave you many challenges and you met them head-on ! You are at peace now..... and dad has come to join you. Take care of each other and until we meet again, we will take care here on earth. Love Jerry xx

When I bought my house at Walnut Beach, Maudie welcomed me and my family to the neighborhood. She treated my kids as they were her own. Her jokes and wit was non-stop. I have many wonderful memories of the countless parties we attended together. She also organized several garage sales to earn money for the Marina, The only problem was we ate and drank up all the profits. My family and I will miss her.

twenty three years ago, Mike and Maudie welcomed me to our neighborhood. they have been good friends ever since.

Auntie Maudie was like a second mother to me. Whenever, my parents went to Ireland, they would send Patrick and me to stay with Auntie Maudie and Uncle Mike. She would treat us as one of her own, kissing our boo boo's and comforting us when we were homesick. I always appreciated how kind and supportive she was to my mom, when Mom decided to go back to nursing school. I also appreciated the cards and notes Auntie Maudie would send to me at different times in my life. She always took the time to write a thoughtful note. I will miss her so much!

Much love,
Rosemarie
