Michael Thompson Obituary

Michael Reid Thompson Michael Reid Thompson passed away on August 1, 2013. He was born June 4, 1948, in Oakland, CA, to Warren and Candace Thompson. He is survived by the love of his life, Sandi Thompson; and his sons, James Thompson and Tony Orozco; plus his godson, Robert Orozco. He also leaves behind his brother, Steve Thompson (Barbara); sisters, Kris Edgmon (Kevin), and Beth Balentine (Mike); and sister-in-law, Fern Miller; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His parents moved from Oakland, CA, to Lake County when he was just five years old. Mike graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1966, then went to Napa J.C. He then went on to Denver University in Colorado where he received his degree in Sports Medicine as well as a teaching certificate. While in Denver he was a trainer for the Denver Nuggets basketball team as well as for the semi-pro Colts Football team, and an assistant trainer for the Denver Broncos. He was also a trainer for the Australian tennis pro, Rod Laver. After returning to Lake County he worked for the County of Lake for 30 plus years where he met his future wife, Sandi, in 1979. His family is very proud to say that Mike was a man of many accomplishments. Following his father's footsteps, he founded the first youth football program in Lake County, known then as the Westshore Packers. His father, Warren Thompson, had created the first farm baseball league in Lakeport. Also during that time he was the assistant football coach for Clear Lake High School. If not busy enough, in the early '80s he was instrumental in founding the League Lake County Adult Softball Association (LCASA), which is still going strong today. The '90s brought him a two time Senior Amateur Golf Championship in Lake County, as well as coaching the Clear Lake High School golf team. In 2003 he was the founder of the Corvettes of Lake County which has brought much joy to many. Mike's biggest passions were his family, friends, the community, and golf. He was known for his inspiration as a mentor to youths, strong heart, being full of life, and touching numerous hearts for the better. Unbeknownst to many, Mike had a beautiful singing voice which his family had the pleasure of hearing every Christmas. We will miss his boisterous laugh and bear hugs. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lakeside County Park, Field A, on August 17 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers please send any donations to the Clear Lake High School Athletics Department, 350 Lange St., Lakeport, CA 95453. I met mike while inspecting trucks at the special district. I saw vette stuff in his office and he had just bought a new 2003 z06. Fawn and I had just bought a 2002 coupe. He invited us to attend a corvette club meeting and the rest is history. He was very passionate for the club and all things corvette. We were very impressed by his commitment to lake county. He was a very special person and a friend to us.

It would take to long to say what all the tings that cross my mind. Mike and I were room mates in our 20's,for 5 years or so before we both moved on to getting married and leading a new life. Mike, Sandi, my wife Judy and me along with a few other close friends remained very close, from going to ball games, Sunday was always a party at one of our houses for football..49er's. We were always together for some reason, both of us coached at Clear Lake high school, played in every adult sports leagues there were. Both Mike and I worked with the county to get the softball fields at the county park. We organized and ran the adult basketball leagues. We had a tight close knit of friends and throughout the years more friends joined in. Mike was not only one of my best friends both more like a brother. One of the nicest, friendly and giving person I have ever met. Mike you'll be missed more than anyone could ever know. I love you Mike and I will see you again. My thoughts and prayers go out to not only the Thompson family, but to all that new him. Ron Jackson

My Dad was a great person, and he was so much into sports like I was. I remember just sitting around and laugh and joke around. I will miss him so much, but he is in my heart and soul everyday. I am proud to be his son. I love you Dad.

Years ago I was Mike and Sandis neighbor. Everytime I saw Mike he was just so happy with a big grin on his face. He was a very sweet man.
Sounds like he passed that smile onto many others through his coaching and caring for other people.
Rest in peace Mike.

As Mike's next door neighbors, we will miss his warm smile, loving gestures, and infectious spirit. But what we will surely miss the most is the competition of seeing who will be the first one to mow both lawns, Mike, or my husband Dave. No worries though, we got it from here on Mike. We miss you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and loved ones during this time of loss. Lots of hugs.

My condolences to the Thompson family for your loss. Coach Thompson instilled a passion for football in me many years ago. His teachings are alive and strong today through my appreciation of teamwork, hard work, and commitment which reach far beyond a sports field.

Dear Thompson Family, I was so sad to hear of Mike's passing. He was a dear friend and like a big brother to me in high school. Always tried to go the extra mile for someone. I will miss you.

August 12, 2013

I will always remember Mike's kindness long after we had graduated from high school together. I bumped into him at the post office one day, and after we chatted a bit, we got on to a discussion about the economy. I told him I didn't have enough money to buy some firewood, even though I was working full time, and a fireplace was the only way I had to heat my house. The next day I came home to a stack of wood he and his son delivered while I was at work. When I tried to thank him, he told me that we were classmates, which made us family, and we were all here to help each other. He was truly a great person, and I shall always remember him and his kindness and generosity.
I'm very sorry I won't be able to attend his Celebration of Life so I could share more stories about him.
